My dad's name is Jim. Compression Man is a new recording superhero. He fights alongside Efficient Man (think about it, he can work so efficiently, he can learn anything in no time and get his laundry done too. may seem like not much of a super hero, but I dare anybody to fight him, cuz he'll master martial arts by the time the fight is supposed to start)

doing laundry is harder than recording if you're doing it at a laundromat because you sit there and just wait.....

Hell, just have to go about 50 feet from my door to wash my clothes (off-campus apartment near cal poly slo) and I still go as long as I absolutely can before doing it.

Man, the spacebar on this keyboard sucks... using some stupid web kiosk in the university union. Got half an hour left to wait till my nextclass because Ileftmylast one early to go get a sandwich.

And might I add, that a friend at the sandwich placemade it for me, and it was possibly the biggest sandwich I've ever had. Itwas amazing. Only sandwich I've really hada hard timegetting in my mouth, and I eatreally big sandwiches (only food, I know you're all thinking dirty thoughts.)

it's funny you say that, I JUST got finished with a gigantic chicken salad sandwich. bad for your breath, good for your heart.

I like this tune, and yeah for 17, damn. Wish I had something like this done when I was 17. Good chords.

Anyway, I hear a Foo Fighters vibe from The Colour and the Shape (Doll, especially the very beginning). I agree with Cosmic on the building and vocal performance. I would shorten the song overall and build quicker - but clean, don't rock into something. Maybe add a clean rhythm guitar.

Around 2:00 those backround "oohs" are a good idea but they're causing some trouble back there. If you can't nail 'em, pull 'em out.

I generally agree with the previous comments regarding the mix. Real nice job tho'.

cool stuff

hey,
im kinda in the same boat as you man, 18, sending demos off to colleges and such. I really like the tune, i agree that the vox in the beginning could be cleaned up a bit. Again, i think its awesome that there are some more of us our age not just writing emo songs...so props....i hear a strong smashing pumpkins (siamese dream in particular) influence...let me know if im right there...really cool harmonies this is one of the few songs ive really dug lately...again very impressive
-jake

yes! off siamese dream, listen to soma and you'll *sorta* get my general muse for the song. but thanks to scareddude and Jakearabble for the kind words. jake...is there somewhere I can hear one of your songs?

Not really hearing the "colour and shape" likeness apart from the first 3 notes sung are the same notes as the first 3 notes sung in "Doll". Oooh, the end of the second bit has a resemblence with the guitar.

Reminds me alot more of Smashing pumpkins's chilled stuff.

the songs aren't cleared.....i'll try later I guess...any suggestions on which to listen to?

my personal favorites are only son and contamination...check those out first
thanks for listening...sorry about the whole not cleared yet bit...i guess that will take a little while
-jake

i like this track quite a bit. get the pitch in your head for the beginning. it's tough singing without any music backing you unless you're trained/really talented. Maybe try playing the notes on guitar or piano in your headphones so you've got a reference. And confidence. it's all about confidence.

i'm gettin an elliott smith vibe off it a little bit. the bass gets a little boomy around 2:45... maybe cause i have a sub.

but yeah, this one definitely got "saved" instead of "opened." nice work.

wow you guys are good....I very recently have gotten into Elliot Smith and have been obsessed, mainly with Either/Or and the awesome arrangements on Figure 8. so yeah....thanks. by the way if you save it, you could retitle it Julian Fader - As Little Above Ground As Possible (that's what I'm calling it for now and that's my name)

hey sorry about that zepp...songs are now cleared...id love to hear your feedback...thanks
-jake

jeez...listened to Only Son, I'm trying to get the others to work.
This is great, that fourth chord (the minor one) is dead sexy if you ask me (alot because of the voicing you use on the piano). Sounds like Ben Folds if he wasn't a wimp :)

Stencil Balloon: trumpet...this is great, it sounds very theatrical to me. your voice sounds better than somebody who is 18 as well to me. I'm going to keep listening later but I have to get off.

oh yeah tell me:
what are you using to record?

im glad u liked that chord in only son...that is a C#maj7 voiced like a Fmin7 on top of a C#...one of my favorites...glad u liked it...stencil baloon is probably my favorite...thanks for listenin man...keep listenin...get some more of ur stuff up as well
-jake

woops...didnt answer ur question...here is the set up
mics goin thru my mackie 1202...into my delta 66 box and into cubase sx...i track and mix in cubase....if u have any other questions as far as mics go etc let me know
-jake

I'm mostly curious on what you used to mic the drums, but also the brass...?

drums were micd with a mxl67 and 57 as oheads...sennheiser 835 on snare...audix f12 in bass drum....horns were usually tracked using the mxl 67
-jake

I use an F12 as well, it's not great but it's alright. 57 as an overhead is pretty painful to me, I picked up a pair of Oktava MK012s which work really well, that would brighten up your snare sound a bit for sure. As it is, your stuff sounds alot better than the mics would suggest which just means that you're probably a good engineer.
