Can (should) a song go from 240bpm to 200bpm? I have a song that for the first 1:40 is all at 240bpm and I want it to then go to a slower 200bpm but is just does not sound or feel right. Should there be some kind of bridge or break down before going into the 200bpm?

I play death metal (guitar) and I am programming a drum machine. Any and all help would be great. Thank you…

The transition usually works better if you do it in an obvious way, like stopping the fast section drums completely for a bar then bring in the slower section drums, with a sustained string bend or spacey wah or zigzag tremelo or something to tie the two sections together

There are no rules my friend. You can go from 300 to 75 if it sounds right to you. But yeah, if it doesn't sound right maybe you should put some sort of transitional drum fill or guitar riff to split the two sections. It all depends on the makeup of the two parts you're dealing with now and you're intuition as a songwriter.

Very cool to know there are no rules and as long as it sounds good all is well in the world of death metal!!!

Hey Metalhead, you got any new songs your working on? How about a full song this time?

Classical music has no time signature. Neither does poorly played rock.

try this... go with the 240 or whatever then to transition, put two beats rest then go right into the 70 or whatever, im too lazy to scroll up...
its 7 am and i havent slept yet :(

Man, I have had a project in the works forever and I keep putting it on the back burner due to other projects. Right now I'm actually "producing" an album for a local band that I think has potential. I say producing because I'm actually helping them rearrange the songs and polish them all up in addition to recording them. It's a fun process but it means I'm going like 2 or 3 months without any time to work on my own stuff. Starting to go crazy here!
All of that extreme/death metal stuff I was doing was pretty much just one off stuff for fun because I didn't have enough time to work on something seriously. You will see a really technical prog metal album from me one of these days. ;)

Well dude, I hope you get a chance to do your death metal project sometime. Very cool that your producing now for that band, good luck and post some clips when you can.

Like the guys said, if you use a very delliberate "I'm stopping this tempo and going into this one" by use of a short pause or break with a guitar riff or something that'd work out well if you do it right. But, if you're really conserned about it being smooth (which I'd venture to emagine that you're not because I know the nature of death metal) the slickest way to change tempos is to half it or double it and change the drum beat. I find it adds a lot of demension to the song and the emo-cores in the front row can keep throwing down to the same tempo as they were in the first part of the song.

But, I dunno, sounds like what you got wouldn't be able to be halfed and still sound good if you're only slowing down by 40 BPM or whatever it was.
