You have proven yourself to be a gentlemen and a true asset to this little songwriter community we have here. I find I don't hang in many of the other forums any longer (in part because there often seems to be more BS than subtance - but after 7 plus years, I still visit this forum - because of the postive energy that a few of the people bring.

I agree that the general tone and content of this site is consistantly positive, professional and helpful - and you, gecko and a few others make this particular forum one that I enjoy.

Thank you for attempting to maintain the intregrity of this forum. I concur with your comments and support your view. I hope that we can keep this forum a place dedicated to improving the craft of songwriting.

I've tried the song a day thing as well, and find that it's quite noble and quite difficult. What I found I liked was having others going through the same process, but couldn't get others, however willing, to keep up. So I, too, ended up not keeping up. I'm not blaming them, it's just that my willpower isn't strong enough.

Then the idea evolved into doing a song a week, keeping the idea of creating a collective of like-minded people. Out of a group of 8 people, there would still be at least 2 or 3 weekly pieces other than my own, so it was enough to keep me going. The weekly schedule stayed fresh by adding the element of assignments, meaning one person from the group would give an assignment for any given week. That has been going great for a little over a year now, and I recently had the even brighter idea of opening it up to anyone else who may be interested and making a web project out of it.

Who knows...what works for me might work for some of you?

i've made on average about 2 songs(some instrumental) a day for the past 5 years(since i was 17)when i was 15-16 i was making music everyday, but not really full blown songs). when i set out to make an album i usually do 10 songs one day, then 10 songs the next day. its the best way to work. its my job!

An excellent idea. We ran challenges around here for a bit (See past threads) and I had thought to start back up again in January but this could be a great motivator for the new year also.

Its all about push or pull - generate loads of material and edit judiciously or wait for a riff, progression or lyric to set you off in a direction, or something in between.

I think there is a lot to be said for regular exercise of the writing muscle - but you have to know when you are writing to train or writing like you are in a race - if you get my metaphor.

New job is taking a lot of time and I am pleased to say creative energy so I have been trying not to write a song a day, but damn me I have still managed to write 3 reasonable songs in a month.

Ditto to Mikeh on forum tone and support for Up-fiddler and Gecko quality input

Well, I certainly recommend it highly, whether you set it up separately or link weekly to the new assignment on soundsoftheweak.

Obviously I personally would prefer the latter, as my goal right now is to get at least a few more people involved. But objectively, it could work better for people on HR, having the structure of the thing be external to the board. I've intentionally set up soundsoftheweak withOUT any direct form of feedback, so it literally is just about the process of recording on a weekly basis--the element of a podcast just keeps you a bit more on your toes so you're submitting something you're comfortable with others hearing. There is no bar for entry, no judgment system in place at all. I suppose for some that would be a drawback, but that's where this board comes in.

Ha, I guess I just ran in a circle!

Is there anything preventing HR members from doing both with the same material? More ears is bettersome by my way of thinking. How does everyone else feel?

Certainly not! I would hope that to be the case, since I highly agree with the "more ears" idea.
