Sonar???

I don't see what the big deal is. On the day that Sonar comes out my Cakewalk 9 is not going to suddenly turn into a Pumpkin. Right now it works, I like it, and so for now I'm happy. After Sonar has been out for awhile I will read the reviews, check word of mouth and this bullitin board, and then upgrade if I want.

As for their policy of selling out existing stock, they are just doing the same thing that every other software and hardware company does. It's a buyer beware world out there. I suppose if they pulled CW9 off the market someone would probably bitch about their choices being limited.

I think they WILL have a fire sale on 9, and it will give some folks who don't have $500 a chance to get some decent software at a bargain price.

Just my opinion .... and no I wont keep barking it.

I understand RWhite and usually I would do what your doing. Im not the kind of person who usually likes to be the first to own a new thing. I guess this is just kind of an impulse buy (the synth plug ins and direct x effects are probablly what sold me. the split screen capability will be cool too though). On the upside though if its full of bugs I can probablly sell it on Ebay for at least the $99 I paid for it and still have my old PA9. Oh and thanks for agreeing not be an ass like monty, maybe one day he will mature.

hey Aquanaut, I say we just ignore monty. Maybe without an audience he won't be such an ass clown.

…LIAR!…

Okay I guess you’ve had enough. Considered yourselves hazed. Some of us like to mess with the new members just to see how much they can be rattled. Welcome aboard gentlemen. There are tons of past threads with tons of info buried in them. Just takes some patience. I’m usually an ass clown in the cave, but I managed to escape for a while. Dragon’s mind police have hauled my ass back so I’ll be seeing ya.:)

Gee, they were all so responsive when the fussing and farting was going on. They must all just be assholes.

I think the time has come to shitcan the whole "recording" thing and "go live ."

I've created a monster!

Shite! Never knew my thread would cause such controversy. But kinda glad it did!

A musician I recently met bought a hot new PC and Pro Suite (around 3 grand invested!) this past Christmas. He's pissed now that that, barely 3 months later, the PC is "outdated" and the Pro Suite is being replaced by the "Next Big Thing". And he has a right to be frustrated. I damn near made the same major mistake!

So, after all the controversy, I've made my decision: buy a 6 month old "outdated" PC with everything I need for Cakewalk, at about 1/3 of what my friend paid for his; and, I'm buying Pro Audio 9 at the bargain "close out" price.
Why this decision? Well, being the first on the block with new technology and software is expensive, and has it's share of bugs. By the time those bugs are fixed, upgrading may be a wise decision for me. I can get the system and software I wanted way before the Sonar hype, at a fraction of the cost of a new system that will surely be OUTDATED by Autumn 2001!
Darn few of Cakewalk's thousands of users are genuinely "professionals", much less stars with big bucks contracts and albums on the charts! Thus, for the average user, is there really a "need" to have the "enhancements" or merely a desire to keep up with the guy next door and have, at least for a few months, the latest Cool New Thing?

Reality: technology advances at an astounding rate. By the time the "Hot New State Of The Art" item hits the retailers' shelves, designers are already putting the finishing touches on NEXT WEEK'S new technology specifically designed to make the "new" today outmoded toorrow! Good luck keeping up. Those who try to must have a lot more "expendable income" and time on their hands than I!

Reality 2: Good ol' analog was the ONLY way for many years. Even yesterday's digital recording technology (yes, Pro Audio 9 is at the top of the list) offers overwhelming advantages over analog recording! Now it's just a matter of refinement.

Thus: if I truly "needed" (ie: was a pro who depended on it to make my house payments!) the hot new tech, I'd readily invest. I'm not. Few of us are. If I can get a horribly "outmoded" PC and software that was absolutely grand a few short months ago for nearly a giveaway price, then that is a Godsend to me. If I can be up and running for less than I'd pay for a decent guitar, I'd be a fool not to jump on it! And, once the New Tech bugs are worked out, and Sonar version 2 (or 3, or 4) comes out, I might just find it wise to upgrade.

Ya know, it's no secret (though us "grownups" choose to ignore it) that New Technology hype has the SAME effect on us as toy ads at Christmas have on children!
"I want! I need! I gotta have!"
Well, whatever you chose and use, enjoy. If my music is going to sound good, it's goin to sound good because of the care and passion and attention I put into it; not because I was using 4.0 instead of 3.1 software!

To sum it up, good music comes from the heart and soul of the musician. Good gear may be important, but it comes a far second to how one thinks, feels, and sculpts expressions in words and music. Technology is cool, but no technology is going to truly make you a better musician or songwriter. Any artist needs tools; but when the tools are more critical than ability and inspiration, a hell of a lot more is lost than gained.

Thanks, everyone, for your opinions, and remember: the music comes first!

You're a wise man Graymalkin. Hype is the name of their game. They'd love for everyone to just jump in and buy their new stuff before all the bugs are fixed and the word gets around that it's the same old software with some bells and whistles added. I think Pro Audio 9 is up to release 9.03 now. Does that say something? Beware of the hype...they all do it.

Yes and No Monty.. I think Cake are about to do a Nuendo, i.e. a completely new setup with new algorithms and based on the new faster puters. I'm still waiting?? They could tell us more on the site and have more detailed pics.

cheers
john

I’ve already done my email correspondence with them and I know what the difference is. I’ll stick with 9 for now, thank you…weenie.

Monty..don't you think you are overdoing the weenie bit....a weenie bit :)

It's just that it's such a silly word, I just...just......can't...re...sist...WHEEENNIEEE...WHEEENIEEE...WHEEENIEE...HELP ME...I'M A FALLEN WEENIE AND I CAN'T GET UP...

Thank you John. Doesn't it take one to know one? It beats being "normal".
