Ok I am new to midi and drum programming, but not new to Sonar. I am the guy that usually just plugs in and hits record, strictly all audio so far. I have decided to get into drum programming and give it a shot. I just picked up Drum Kit From Hell 2, and have it installed and good to go. I can open it up in Sonar 3 pro and can get sound lol, but thats where I get lost.

How do you guys create your drum tracks? Do you input each hit? Do you use the pattern brush tool in the piano view? Is there a step I am missing? The pattern brush tool, seems to do what its supposed to do, but I am not a drummer so I don't know what half those fills and crap even mean. But I know in my head what i want the drums/beat to sound like.

I guess I have all the tools (atleast I think), but now I am kind of lost at how to even get started. I know it's not an easy thing to do, just looking for some tips, or tutorials, or sites that are a bit more in tune with this subject.

Thanks.

I would start by using session drummer to play DKFH.

Ther is a control panel icon on session drummer that looks like a sprocket,in the panel you set the appropriate outputs to correspond with DKFH.
Then load patterns into the session drummer window and play.
There are lots and lots of other ways to do MIDI drums, this is just an easy way to start.

I recommend importing a midi file and playing over the VSC or perhaps some of the cakewalk demo stuff and taking a "look under the hood"to get a better understanding how this all works.

Midi may seem complicated at first, but once you get to know it,it really makes sense.Midi is to musicians what the metric system is to Americans.

Here's some links to get you started...

Thanks for the links acidrock! I will check them out. I messed with it some last night and read some articles online. I find both the piano view, and event view to be pretty cumbersome. I guess I will keep searching for a better way. I have a little midiman midi controller keyboard but the latency on it renders it almost useless. I will see if I can get the latency down on in and then maybe I will like it better. Thanks. Maybe it's time for a computer upgrade lol ;-)

I input each hit in the piano roll. I have a MIDI controller but I don't use it for doing drums. I do it all with the mouse. Of course you need to know a little about drumming to do it effectively, you also need to know time signatures and note values pretty well.

You can also make MIDI groove clips which work just like drum loops.
