some pipes and drums

This is me on guitar, my son on small pipes, and our friend on djembe. I thought it would be easier to mix than it was - the guitar, the pipes (especially the drones) and the top end of the drum all sort of sit in the same area.

The highland small pipes are the smaller, indoor-voice-using cousin of the highland bagpipes, which my son also plays. The bagpipes are on a non-A-440 tuning system, they're loud as f*#@, and he left them in Lubbock when he came home for xmas break. We'll pick up with those in the summer.

I once again tried some outboard processing on one of these - the djembe is going through an outboard compressor, and the whole mix is going through a pair of ACMP-81s (from the group buy a few years back) for some EQ and saturation. The other one is all in the box. Guess which is which - hint, the fat looking one is the outboard one - weird.

Anyway, lemme know what you think.

it sounds like bagpipes are tuned to A=432 or some other lower tuning, I like the non equal temperament of the bagpipes. I'd personally prefer more dynamics from the percussion and snappyness at 5 and 10k, they are a little dull sounding but apart from that like it.

When I was taking cello lessons I had to tune to 441!
Nice drone.
The smash chords are pretty bright and very aggressive - intentional I know but almost overwhelming.
I like the whole thing I enjoyed the percussion as it is.

heh - the name of our band is 'Exploder' - but maybe I should chill on the chords. We retracked the djembe a couple of times - the player and I were never quite happy with it, but I have yet to hear back from the player on this version. I'll experiment with 5k and 10k - thanks!

Wow that's pretty cool. I like the overall sound of the top mix, but the percussion sounds better in the bottom one to me.

This is so awesome. Being a Canadian maritime I was pretty stoked to hear some bag pipes on here. Certainly transported me back home in heartbeat. Very great use of the three instruments. And I like how they are dancing around each other in the mix.

If I had to add anything at all it would be to add some space and air around those pipes. They are pretty dry. They just are sort of missing that feeling of being played in the hills or sounding off in a huge field. That nuance that gives me the chills when I go to a military display or the local highland games. And that is by no means meant negatively, I have heard horror stories of people try to capture pipes, so many kudos to capturing them so honestly! You did a fantastic job in any case. I would be super great full to hear more if that ever happens.

Thanks - I really don't know what I'm doing with the outboard compressor, and that probably explains the difference.

I think the first mix crushes the second one. It has space and sounds more like a finished product, while the second one sounds more like a demo to me. I like the percussion in the first one as well.. it being more upfront gives you different things to focus on. I do agree that it is quite dry overall though. For some reason the drone in the second one was getting on my nerves, I think it might be the mixing? The frequency sounds like it is ringing in my head. The first one is much more subtle, and I like when you have the break in the middle of the song.. very cool. I'll be honest though, any time I think of bagpipes I think of Ross:

Thanks again everyone - I re-did the second one, and the new mix appears to be showing up in the original post in the thread, which is strange - same name track I guess. In case I'm wrong, here it is again:

You may notice it appears as fat as the first track now.

I ran it through the ACMP-81s like the first one (hence the visual fatness), and I ran the djembe through the outboard compressor, this time with more sensible settings. I also pushed back the guitar a little, and I added some reverb to the chanter, the guitar, and the top of the djembe.
