Some mics for Christmas

Hey guys! Christmas is coming and I decided to get myself some studio gear. Considering my current rig, i'll probably be going with mics, so I need some help and suggestions on what to choose.
Here's the deal, i'm slowly buying mics to be able to record drums. I already have the 57 and would like to buy a mic or matched pair that could be used for something else like vocals, guitars, ... I'm not looking for budget stuff but not top of the line either.. Let's aim for 250 bucks maybe.

As I see it these would be the choices for now:
A bundle of dynamics for toms
Pair of small diaphragm condensers
A large diaphragm condenser
Another sm57

So, name some of those mics which are worth more than their price

Hey. For a pair of SDCs you could probably get something in that price range, but I'd encourage you to save up a little and look at the oktavas or some sm81s maybe.

I don't have massive LDC experience, but for the money I paid (used), I love my mk219. I find it to be more natural than some other condensers.
Hope that's useful to ya.

I agree. I was going to go for some Rode NT5s a while back when I was shopping for a SDC pair, but then I realized the Oktavas (MK-012) were just a tad bit outside of my price range. I thought I'm probably going to have these mics for my whole life, so I just saved up a bit more and went for the Oktavas.

For acoustic guitar or other precision work, I'd get a couple of omnis. If you're looking for something that's great for the money, I'd steer you towards the Naiant mics.

For drum kit overheads, a pair of Oktava MK-012 mics (even an unmatched pair) are a great choice. I know some folks on his board also use the Naiant mics in an ORTF configuration for that. I don't personally have an opinion on such use because I haven't tried it. :)

For vocals, I'd would suggest either a LDC (e.g. CAD M9, CAD M179, etc.) or a ribbon.

For electric guitar... *shrugs*. Anything, really, but a lot of folks seem to like ribbons for that, too.

You'll also probably want a good kick mic if you're doing drum kit work, e.g. an AKG D112. IIRC, some folks also like the Shure SM7B. YMMV. Do not, under any circumstances, buy Nady's kick mic. :)

Beyond that, I've had decent luck using cheap AKG supercardioid dynamic mics for tom mics. You can often find them in quantities of three for about $15 apiece.

A friend of mine is looking for a 3 pack of these - do you have a link?

Friend yer right.
You going shopping again Henry?:laughings:

No, no. I have plenty of drum microphones. ;)

My friend is just getting back into live sound after years of retirement and raved about some EV supercardioid dynamic microphones that he used for toms and can't find them now (discontinued). And were just about $15. a piece!

Those AKG's sound like what he is looking for.

I'll be shopping around after the holidays for some sales though.
