Some help with my mix...

My singer and I recorded this song. I am a newbie and Im doing all the instruments (programming) and mixing. Can anyone give me some pointers on making this mix sound better? I recorded guitars using my Line 6 Toneport and the added software, Trilogy bass, and EZDrummer. Thanks in advance!

Cool tune. Love this stuff. Wish you had the whole song up. I like this guys voice. Fits the tune nicely. Sounding pretty good on my end. Sounds like your just on the border of distorting though. I don't dig the snare much but that would be a matter of personal taste. Guitars have a nice seperation and the vocals sound good. Vocals could come a tad forward maybe. Nice song. Post the finished version when you get it done.

This is so common when the guitar player is mixing the song. I suggest turning the guitars down, bringing the drums way up. My little formula is to start mixing with just lead vocal, kick and bass, get them to gel together, should be about the same levels. Then add in snare and hihat/cymbals, set the levels and panning. Then add in the supporting instruments, piano, guitar, etc. They should be lower in the mix because they only support the main rhythm and melody. If they need to a solo, bring up and put them back down when finished.

Yeah, let's hear the whole song. sounds like it's off to a good start.

yep...drums are lost. I actually think the mix is pretty closely balanced except for parity betwen the bass guit and drums.....mebbe a smidge up on the vox might be needed after boosting the cans...which, I guess, is exactly where Chile is with it.

First of all, Great sounding tune, love the recording feel to it, although, the drums are bit lost and the guitar is a bit to up in ur face.....

So bring the drums closer, guitar more back, leave the vocals as is!

I love the tune and the voice.
Mix lacks low end and on the whole is not aggressive enough. Drums sound very thin and need a grooving deep sound. Hope you can fix and repost, this is very good.

Thanks for all the info! I'm working with a pair of old headphones so I can only do soo much but this is really helpful. This was actually all recorded in my Camry in the Wal Mart parking lot so I'm doing what I can lol. I redid some stuff from your advice. How does this sound??

Dude, I like your voice better than the guy who sings this song... seriously, I never really liked it until I heard your version.

As for the mix, the guitars I think need to be thinned a bit and brought down and the drums need some body to them, they aren't very present at all. But I really like your voice man, you got something good there! Or whoever recorded the vocals that is, it seems you said that it was a friend of yours... either way, they sound great. Believe me though, as an electric guitarist and mixer I understand your dilema about wanting them to be heard but also trying to get a real good mix.

Thanks! Is that advice for the first mix at the top or the one I just posted. We are actually trying to make a demo cd for a new cover band we are trying to start. My old cover band just broke up so I'm back at the drawing board again...

Dang! I love it bro! This cat can sing better than the original. I would turn down the guitars and pull up the drums. With me being a drummer that was the first thing that hit me. I must admit that I was disappointed when the song ended so fast. Cant wait to hear the entire version. Great start!!

Did you do anything else different? You seem to have a low end rumble that's irratating now. I think I prefered your first mix. It's hard to get EZ to sound great and fat. I think individual eqing on the drum tracks (if you can seperate them) would do more than compression. Compress after. After a few listens now the guitars could be a bit brighter. No ... Actually it's probably the bass guitar that's competing for space. Seems to be a weird low end on it that's working against the guitars. Not sure if others hear that. JMHO.

Just listened to the 2nd one.. I really like it.. The vocalist seems like he's been singing jazz his whole life... Sounds great! The guitars need to come up, in my opinion... The song needs some beef. Drums sound pretty good.

If that's your singer, you'll have a killer cover band, bro. Great vocals.
