Some feedback on my singing

Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate some feedback on my singing voice. I’m a guitar player who enjoys singing and writing music, but I feel like my voice sounds pretty bad. I’m too shy to ask someone in person so I thought I’d do it anonymously.

I just made two snippets of the kind of songs I’d like to be able to sing well. Unfortunately the only recording equipment to hand was a phone but you should get an idea. While I probably could have gotten a better take, I thought these were OK.

Now, even though the room I was in is ‘reverby’ and probably quite flattering to my voice, I still think it’s really unpleasant to listen to. Am I right or is it just me? I’m not looking to win any singing competitions, I’d just like a voice that is ‘adequate’ for my own purposes. Basically, if I recorded a song really well and then sang over it, would my voice ruin it?

(that one was pretty hard to hit for me to hit all the notes)

Thanks in advance, appreciate it!

I think it sounds alright, no major red flags here. Except you really need to record with something other than a cell phone. Try close miking the vocals and it would be a more honest test.

Sound good, I think the mastering could be better, well done :)

From what little I can hear: You sound pretty good. like you can hold a tune, and have nice base to your voice.

But get an actual mic and audio interface. I think you will sound good if you record it.

Are there any open mike jams in your area? I think you have a great foundation, and I think one thing that will help you (and I personally feel, from the little bit I heard, like you're at a level where you're ready for it) is singing live, on stage. No, definitely not Karaoke. A venue where you can bring up your guitar, and play two or three songs, in a very laid-back environment. This kind of playing will build your confidence, which will help you with how you project, and how you connect, both with the song, and with the audience.
If I was at a jam night, having a beer, and you got up on stage, I honestly think I'd enjoy your performance.

Definitely keep it up.

Thanks for that, I really appreciate it (and everyone else!). I'm not a shy person generally, but for some reason the thought of doing that terrifies me! I just can't imagine someone enjoying the sound of my voice... I'd love to try backing singing to 'ease' into it but I've no band or anything at the moment.

I do have an audio interface and an SM57 for recording electric guitar. When I have more free time I might try making a better quality recording and see how that turns out.

Harvey Keitel has a special message just for you at 0:39 in this video.:

Here's a tip. Most people can't sing, or won't sing and they're all deeply envious of those who can sing and do sing. Don't worry about what you sound like to you.
