To pre-empt the comments about the cheese factor of this one, I’ll just say, “Hey, my girlfriend loves the song…”
Anyway, I have a Sinatra cover for critique. Please feel free tell me what you would change, add, or delete and point out any performance “glitches” I need to fix:
Fly Me to the Moon
I recorded the whole thing with my Taylor 314CE, two Shure SM57s for guitar, an MXL V67 for vocals, Sonar 2.2XL, and my Aardvark 24/96.
There are two rhythm guitar parts, each recorded in triplicate (three tracks each). I used an X-Y configuration of SM57 mics at the 12th fret as well as a third track with a line input from the Fishman Prefix Preamp built into the guitar. One rhythm part is panned 17% left (all three tracks) and the other to the right 17%.
For a different sound on the lead part, I still recorded in triplicate, but panned one mic track left 11% and the other to the right 11%. I then cut the level way down on the line input track (something like –26). I also moved the timing of the right-side track just a hair behind the left to create some depth.
The vocals are tripled. The main is right up the center and the others are to the right and left each 34%. The left and right vocal tracks are reduced to –16 in level.
Personally, I’m not really crazy about the tripled vocals.
