solid state logic compressor and cubase

i am having a problem previewing my compress work with the ssl compresser plugin to cubase sx... i reallly need to know how to fix this!!! PLEASE HELP!

What do you mean previewing? Can you not hear the plug-in doing anything, like it is bypassed? We need more information before we can help you.

once it is bypassed i can hear the difference... but there is a preview button that is supposed to allow you to listen while you compress....

sounds like you're using in place processing?

Try running the compressor on an insert on whatever channel/group/buss you are trying to compress, this way you aren't effecting the original wav file. So if you go back to remix the song all your wav files will be in the original state. Doing it the way you are now you are altering the original music files.

The only time I'll use inplace processing is for things like volume envelopes for fade ins and fade outs on stuff that comes and goes in the mix. You can do stuff like compression, reverb, delay, flanging...anything really but there isn't much point if you have a hang on how to automate your mixes.

Do you have your mixer view up? (The thing with the faders)

Hit the button with the 'e' on it. This brings up the channel. Use the inserts to put the compressor on it. Read the manual to see how to do this.

Rather than double-clicking on the file or using the right-click menu to apply an effect, open the track inspector (I think that's what it's called) by clicking on the little script 'e' in the track mixer on that track's channel. It's also available on the left-hand side of the arrange window if you have your track view expanded big enough.

Once it's open, there is a vertical section just to the right of the fader where you can insert effects onto that track. Just click in one of the black rectangles and a menu will come up which will allow you to select one of your plugins. This way you can bypass that effect by turning it on and off and listen to the difference.

I hope this helps, I'm just responding off the top of my head without sitting in front of my recording PC. I use Nuendo3 but the interface is pretty much the same...

rtfm sounds harsh but ultimately it's the best way to learn cubase.
