software used for live recording (video/audio)

What is a good software for live video and audio recording?

We usually record it unto a mini tape then capture to computer. But this just takes a very long time.
IS there a reliable software that allows me to capture directly ? ?

I'm also very interested in this topic. i have been using audacity and kristal but my new sound interface comes w cubase LE4.

in my mind the most important things for recording live shows would be:

1. stability, you can't ask for a retake if your app crashes halfway through a set

2. lightweight, being a resource hog doesn't help achieve goal #1
