With my room dimensions being limited, would it be a good idea to soofit mount my nearfields? I have a pair of event 20/20 bas.

I have posted a drawing of my room. My thoughts are to build the monitors into their own free standing "case" and then screw it into the corners of the room.

Good , Bad, Other suggestions?

PS I would follow Johns plans from sae, with no angle.

looks easier

Is that 703 ( equivalant ) behind the black area?

Thanks

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but isn't the whole idea of nearfields, that they be unaffected by the room? That is to say they should be positioned so that they are away from the corners/walls/ceilings/soffits etc. etc. and anything which might affect their sound.

Just a thought...

The Room

From my minimal understanding, the room makes all the difference in the world.

I have read too many times that people have had to remix projects after making room changes...For the better.

That is why I want to get it right the first time.

Maybe someone will correct me though.

Thanks

Well, from my understanding I would have thought that you want to mix in as neutral an environment as possible. Anything else will affect the way the mix sounds when played in the target environment - that is to say the one in which it was not mixed (e.g. home stereo, car, boom-box, WalkPerson etc...).

Nearfields give you the ability to approximate this, as they are usually set up so that they are not affected by their environment... This is done by keeping them away from anything which might affect their sound, and also listening to them from a suitable position - for instance think of the NFs and your head (ears) being on the three points of an equilateral triangle, with sides of about 2 metres (6 feet or so), all in the same horizontal plane - so there you are, sitting in your chair, at the console, with the NFs about 2 metres apart, and about 2 metres from your head, but at ear level. You could be in a small room, medium-sized room, or large room, or even in the middle of a field, but what you hear will tend to be less affected by the environment, as you're sitting in the (wait for it...) NEAR-FIELD of the monitors...

PS: They work less-well in a tiny room, as the room start to have an effect on what you're actually hearing...

No that's the soffit mount for the speakers. It's at 90 degrees instead of the standard 60 degrees, which would suit your layout. :)

What are the reasons for soffit installs John? Is there anything beyond the coupling effects- like perhaps imaging etc. that you like about it?

Also, seeing Sjoko2's room, I wondered- how big does the soffit have to be to be effective? His obviously don't extend to the room boundries... It looks more like he was just extending the speaker surface area a bit. I thought they looked awesome and apparently they sound great too.

Oh I see

Sorry John I guess I was confused. From the picture I can only see one set of speakers.

Thanks

Ryan

Is this correct?

I now imagine something like this?
