I really like his music and have a number of his cd's. Great group of musicians that he works with.
I rarely read liner notes, but I did on an older cd that I have of his "The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" and it says:

"For the purist, this disk was recorded with two microphones direct to 2 track analogue, with no mixing, editing or overdubbing. For the audiophile, this disk was recorded to digital multitrack tape, edited and mixed several times. For the listener and music lover, it really doesn't matter!"

All of his recordings are done in live session, this particular one with his brother Wynton on trumpet and Bob Hurst on Bass and Jeff Tain Watts on drum with some additional help from Courtney Pine on tenor sax. The recordings are clear and beautiful and have all of the flavor of a live performance yet all of the control of a digital multitrack
with overdubbing.
Does anyone know what the hell they're doing here? Does anyone have the inside scoop on what gear they're using. I know at they are all truly great musicians and that amounts for a lot of it, but I've also heard great performaces ruined by bad equipment and bad engineering. Somebody did something really right here, and I'm wondering if any of you has pesonal experiene with any of these sessions. They were Recorded at GTS Studio A, i Wembley, England and additional tracks at Mastersound Studio in Astoria, NY and at RCA Studio B
in NYC.
This is what a jazz recording is supposed to sound like. Any clues?

Errr... those are just some of the greatest musicians on this planet... hopefully they got the best studio's and engineers at their disposal.

I'll return a question: have you ever heard Sting sound bad ??

I've had the lukc of seeing Wynton live on a jam session in Brussels last summer... the guys walks in, takes his instrument and the moment he plays the entire band (local jazzies, not bad but not really great either) sounds 10000x better... these are guys that can make any musician sound better then they really are..

Long things short: gear/recording technique/location/... is of no importance with this league of extraordinary musicians....
