I got a pair of Event PS 5 monitors. They did not have enough bass, and the speaker made a weird rattle like something in the cabinet was not 'tight' enough. Got a pair of Event 20/20 bas. Now, the bass is there, but again...a very noticable rattle-like sound from the cabinet (not the cones) with lower frequencies. This really should not be happening should it?

So, what am I??

You might be getting the rattle because of vibrations being reflected back to monitors from whatever they are sitting on. Get some of those glass beads that are flat on one side and set them under the corners of your monitors. You should be able to get them from craft stores.

They may help with the problem. If not then maybe you need to try another brand of monitor.

What you may be hearing is the speakers inherent level of "port chuff." Then again, you might have really gotten 2 pairs of defective speakers. Honestly, I'd think you'd be able to tell the difference. Either way, if you're hear this and it doesn't sound right to you, you should try either a replacement pair or another model altogether.

How are the monitors positioned?

As far as positioning, I have the basic triangle, with myself and the 2 monitors all 5 ft apart.

One problem is that with the style of music I am doing (ambient) there are a lot of very low sounds without much else going on, so there is a good bit of bass but it is also quiet. I suppose that too could be the problem.

Take a CD of your material to the music store with you and check it out on other monitors. That should answer your question for you (and also help you decide on which monitors are best suited for you).

What's supporting the monitors?

Ditto.

The monitors are sitting on top of 42" high monitor stands. They feel very sturdy and I don't think they are part of the problem. I might try putting something soft under the monitors though. But when I lift the monitor off the stand during a playback, the noise still exists.

Maybe you're cranking the bass up too high? I dunno, but if I were doing that low sub-bass stuff, I'd be getting a subwoofer. Have you listened back to your stuff on other speakers? Maybe it's not just the event's that have that problem. It's all about reference. At least listening back on other speaks could narrow down the problem. Without hearing the problem though, I'd wanna say that you're trying to push too much bass through speakers that aren't really meant for it. although the specs seem to differ......damn. Um, it says there's a subsonic filter on those speakers. If you turn that on, do you still get the rattling?

The rattle could be something nearby resonating and/or touching something else, maybe something on the desk?

I thought it might have been something else too, but have put my ear to the monitor and it is coming from the back of the monitor. I did notice that a screw in the back panel was loose, so I tightened it, and it seemed to help, but I would say 70% of the rattle is still there. I feel it might be something in the back where the back cover is. (Don't know what to do about that though).

20/20

Have Event 20/20s and there is no rattle, no problem no matter how low or loud the bass goes unless I push the bass to hard and get clipping or distortion. What king of wires have you got? What is on the end? Is there something loose there? They do, after all, connect in the back - no?

Finally, maybe there is something rattleing in your head in which case you need a doctor, not an audio specialist. You never know!
