So, I just had the room done - New commercial office-grade carpeting, a very heavy (heavy - not "thick") neoprene / rubber blend padding. I love it. More mods to "FrankenDesk" - All that's left to do in here is the track lighting (later this week).
It's like hitting a giant "RESET" button - Everything is nice & clean, cable runs are short, sweet & neat. FrankenDesk now sits a generous and comfortable 1-1/2" higher, thanks to some modified and back-to-back welded uni-track, the DAWs are neatly secured in the rack, and the shelf at the back of the room only has the "essentials" on it. Including a "oatmeal raisin cookie" scented candle.
It took me and a tech SEVEN HOURS to safely dismantle and move everything in here out so the carpeting guys could have their way with the room. Granted, we were working slowly and carefully, coiling the cables as we went along, marking the AC paths, drinking coffee, etc.
It took around three days of installation, recabling and recalibrating to get back "up to spec" again. The new (Sonica-X) DAW and Velodyne sub were installed during this period also. Obviously, this contributed to the time it took.
The bizzare part - After all is said and done, I have around FIFTY POUNDS of cable that ISN'T being reinstalled! Where did it come from? I have no idea.
So much gear has gone through this room in the three years since I moved into it - I never had this much cable at the old place... Coil after coil of 1/4" balanced cable, XLR, S/PDIF, AES/EBU, USB, CAT5, MIDI, etc. that is no longer in use. HUGE amounts of RCA & 1/8" TRS cable from my old "browsing and backup" system and its monitoring path. 3 8-way Hosa snakes that go to what I can't even remember.
Gee, maybe when I start typing these stories, I should have a point - It would make it so much more interesting for the readers...
Okay, here's a point - Use the cable you need, and get the cable you don't need out of the way. That way, when you get new carpeting, you won't have to go through all this crap. It's not much of a point, but at least it's there...
