what is this?
Two things, one I need advice on, and the other.... Well, I need advice on it too. :D

Thing one (let's get Seussified here...):
Today, I found out that a friend of mine is selling all of his bass gear. He wants $2500 for the whole shebang, but I dunno what all he has, so I asked him to price out individual things I may be interested in. He is selling an Ibanez artcore semi-hollow bass - that he claims he paid around $600.00 for - to me for only $300.00. It is this model here...... Would I be getting screwed by paying $300.00 for one of these used? I played on it for about 5 minutes a week ago and it was kinda cool...

Thing two: Does anyone know of any links to Jeff Beck's setup for say... "Goodbye porkpie hat"? I got a new turntable for Christmas and I stole (borrowed) the album "wired" from my dad, and I am in love with that song for some reason. There is a short section in the latter part of the song where there is some kind of badass octave fuzz going on... I want that sound...

Sorry for the long post, I just figured it would save time to kill two birds with one stone here.

Thanks to all who view, and even more thanks to those who decide it's worth their time to reply!! :D

On the Ibanez, Here is one for $377, new. Your call. If he says he paid $600, he's either a liar or makes very poor decisions.

Wow, that makes me glad that I talked him down to $100.00 and a gamecube... :D Thanks for the input!!

From what I understand (all at least second hand knowledge), the Wired era stuff was all on a Les Paul (or at least, mostly) through some Plexi Marshals. Oh, and he would have had one of the first Seymour Duncan pickups, the model which became the JB (where did you think the name came from?).

For the octave thing, if he isn't just playing octaves, it might be an octaver (or whatever the hell that thing is call). Or, even, wasn't Jan Hammer on that album? He always seems to want to sound like a guitar player.

Yeah, Jan is on that album, along with a few other reputable musicians, but I don't think it lists the tracks that they actually played on. It's got to be a guitar though, you can just tell... I guess I just need to get a Marshal and an octaver (or whatever the hell it's called ;) ).

That's pretty cool about the JB though, I never would've guessed. I have one loaded in my SG and in my strat, which is in pieces right now pending reconstruction...

Thanks!

Jan wanted to sound like Jeff & Jeff wanted to sound like Jan - they came close on ...live with the jan hammer group. (When I saw them together doing the set that was essentially that album they weren't as close sonically).
Wired was the 1st Beck LP I bought so the sounds on it really left a strong impression.

Just a little sidenote

ive played that bass and an artcore guitar and absolutely loved both of them. especially the bass.i think it was going for about 500 CAD new where i played it.

I believe the octave fuzz effect would have been an MXR-Blue Box-which was an octave fuzz they built shortly in the mid 1970's. It was probably discontinued long ago-you might look on Ebay.

I saw him live right after the album was released and he played the white Strat for the set-with Jan Hammer as well. The album sounds like the Strat did make it onto several tracks too.
