So I got 3 GLS audio ES58 mics what should I use them for

So not knowing much about mics, what can I use these for, for recording purposes.

I already have drum mics, but I don't have any 57's. Can I use these instead of 57's or are we talking apple's and oranges? What about overheads, or even snare or toms?

Take the ball off and it will be like a 57, although God help the mic on a stick hit.

Advice is always great, but there are so many factors in why a mic works for a given situation. Plus, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I haven't used those personally, but make sure to try them in all the scenarios you mentioned and decide for yourself. Your own ear is the best tool you have (I said tool).

yeah I am going to try them out in a few different senario's just looking for suggestions or what people are using their ES58's or Shure 58's for.

Take the ball off and use them for guitar amps, kick mic, snare mic (underneath the snare so not to get hit), high hat and just about any other loud source.

Or you could leave the ball on and use them for vocals...

I grabbed a couple and use them for live apps, the only downside I've found is handling noise

I noticed that the frequency difference between the 57 and 58 is the range is 10 Hz difference between them. Is that huge?

Huh? i mean 10 hertz is a fair difference in bass but 10 hertz in treble isn't huge. But what is a 10hz difference? 10db of difference in a certain spot? I'm confused.

Well say if I was going to record a snare drum, or guitar cab. People usually use a 57 for that, so I was just wondering since I have 3 of these, if I NEED a 57.

I think he's referring to the high end bump being shifted a bit compared to an SM58. They have a bit of a presence peak thats caused by a resonator disk on the capsule. Michael Joly gave out a mod for removing it and flattening the response. It also takes out some of the time smear and has less hard sibilance.

I've got 3 of the ES-58 and 6 of the ES-57. The ES-57 are great on drums. I'm probably going to take one of the 58's and do that mod just to see how it sounds.

I had the link saved for this because I want to do this mod to at least one of my three ES-57's, but it's been removed from the site . Could you help me out with the info? If not, I'll send Mister Joly an email and see what I get. Just figured I'd check here first!

Yep, I was doing some shop re-organizing and that page was not active for a while. But the free DIY mod instructions for the ES-58 and dual-ribbon mic are both good now.
