i have been lurking these forums for awhile, trying to learn what I needed to purchase in order to do some hiphop vocal recordings from home.

I ended up buying a MXL v93m even though many people recommended the v67g.

I thought my voice could use a bit of a brighter mic than the 67g, so that was the main factor in deciding on this mic.

I like it so far, but i just dont think im getting the most out of my mic because of inexperience. I also have it running through an Audio buddy preamp.

now, im starting think think i might want a 67g too, just for a contrast, and a smoother sound.

i have a sample of a recording at my soundclick page, but be warned, there is some foul language lol.

the first track on the page "self hatred"

i have been playing with the preamp gain a bit. It is entirely too loud if i turn the knob anywhere above barely audible and sounds a bit distorted or picks up too much hiss.

I also have the line-in setting gain at about the 2nd notch from the bottom. I was wondering is this normal for the signal to be this strong? Or am i doing something wrong?

I appreciate any help or feedback. Thanks!

Maybe i missed something...but what are you asking? If you are asking us to listen to the mic, I don't know how we would comment, maybe like this:

Peter - "Listen George! That sure does sound like a v93m"
George - "You are right Peter is sure does!" :D

if you want comments on the song itself you are best off to post it in the mp3 mixing forum

okay, the reason i posted this in a forum with many audiophiles, is because i want to know

am i using the right mic, would the v67 probably be better for my voice?

am i using the mic correctly? setting wise

like i said this is brand new to me, and im just looking to improve my vocal recording quality

i have only heard this mic through headphone and factory compaq computer speakers, i have noticed that my "s"'s are very hard, so i want just some suggestions to improve my recording. Thanks

The sibilance (s sounds) seemed typical for a condenser and a bright one at that But S is a consonant too You can apply software deessing as an effect or make a point of minimizing them in your delivery.

A very detailed microphone like the 93 is a bit like looking at the magnifying side of a bathroom mirror. You see every flaw very big. But that could be said about nearly every other LD condenser too. But you are also seeing every other detail much better.

One thing I noticed was mouth noises and breath intake noises at the start of a line. The best thing to do with those is to mute them during mixing.

i really appreciate the suggestions. And youre right, i am using cool edit pro 2.0, which i am also just learning. I've seen the deesser function somewhere but i wasnt able to locate it when i did the recording.

thanks again.

so, do you think this mic is a bit bright for the rap vocal application?
