I live in Canada and as you can see from the title, am interested in opening my own label. Here is what you should know about what I want:

1. I want my label name, logo, etc. to be fully protected globally.
2. I want the company to be able to distribute music to the public.
3. I will most likely then be looking into register an account with a performance rights group and have it linked to the company bank account which I forgot to mention as a todo.

Any advice from anyone with experience?

come on ppl. doesn't anyone have their own label that can give some advice?

here's my questions to you...

1. why are you starting a label?

2. what do you have to offer a band that they can't do themselves?

i don't know about every band, but i know that if and when we go looking for a label, we're looking for a label that can provide marketing, distribution and some sort of touring budget/connections. if you don't have any of these things, what can you offer the artist?

you're questions have more to do with starting a business. not a label. basically just go down to city hall, and they'll point you in the right direction and give you the correct forms to fill out.

i will be the main artist of the company

City Hall is a good idea, thanks.

yeah its a local thing.
depends on your city hall, I checked this out before and it was around $500 in my area. You need to file a name statement and get a retail licence. Depending on where you live you might need more licences.

unless your looking for tax deductions, theres not a real good reason to do it.
I sell my music to the public and do whatever I WANT THE GOVT CAN KISS MY ASS.

live that whole "kiss ass" thang . . lol

yea

u can always sell to the public

even as a self-artist-comnpany, the reason to start a label is so you at least look professional. but at the end of the day, you are not going to sell an extra cd because u have the label.

now all that stuff about selling internationally, . . . again, u can sell via the web and not shell out any beans other than setting up the site and/or page with cdbaby style sites

global protection for a name and logo - i believe is very expensive, but i dont know that for a fact. local protection is not as expensive. once u register with your local city, county bus. registrar office, ur good.

so you're the main artist? you're going to sign yourself, why? cause you cant get signed to a real label? ive had that idea...

not intending on being a dickhead, you cant just start your own record label just like that.. do you have contacts for what robertt mentioned above?
