Snare Verb

Hi all, what type of snare reverb do you use? or better yet, do you use a reverb on snare? How do you set it up? with a gate? if so, how do you set the release. I don't need brands of plugins, more like what type; i.e., plate, spring, hall, etc. (I'm cheap and hope to get use out of what I have :) ) I know in the end it's up what sounds best to my ear, but I'd like to narrow my experimentation time. Thanks in advance.
 
You're right, there is no "right" answer to this Q. Depends on a million other factors like music type, mix, tempo, reverb make, etc.

That said, though, I like to play around with fairly heavy pre-delay on snare, and then play around with small-to-medium rooms or wood-panel rooms on the decay.
 
In general, I like either plates or smaller room sounds. Usually a predelay anywhere between 30 and 80 ms, with a length between800ms and 1.8 seconds. On bright snappy snares I will often roll some highs off the verb return. On dull snares I may leave the highs flat:)
 
i almost always roll off the highs, and use a small-med room. predelay usually wavers around 50-80... sometimes i'll even put an EQ on the aux after the reverb so i can warm it up(read: tone down highs) even more, then i keep the orig pretty cracky... of course, all of this can go out the window in a second depending on FREAKING EVERYTHING
 
That depends on the "feel" of the song and as to whether a clipped snare sounds right for the mood or not.

It also depends a bit on the rest of the mix; if its a full mix (a lot of instruments or a lot going on) with not a whole lot of sonic space to parcel out to individual elements, I might be more likely to clip the snare shorter (though I personally will usually do that by speeding up the verb decay rather than using a gate). However, if it is a sparse. open mix with plenty of "room", I might be tempted to let the verb breathe.

Also on the subject, I usually (but not always) try to set the pre-delay and the verb decay to time to a multiple of the tempo of the song. It could be 1/8th of a beat or (rarely) a full beat or any *even* multiple in between, but setting the timings to the tempo in that way gives a cleaner and more "sensible" return (to my ears and tastes anyway.)
