I was very sad the day my old receiver was sold, and replaced by a new one, which didn't have a phono preamp stage.
I've been meaning to get an external phono preamp, but it just never happened.
Finally, yesterday, I had a craving for my Lynard Skynard record, and so I decided, what the hell, let's hook it up to the receiver and see what happens.
Obviously, I had to crank the volume to the max to hear anything, and I had to cut the highs, and boost the lows. Even then, it was rather thin and wimpy sounding.
So I ran an output from my receiver into the line in of my laptop, dumped the whole record into Sound Forge, and applied an additional sort of, "inverse RIAA" graphic EQ to the whole thing to fatten it up a bit more, and make it sound like it should.
Overall, I was very pleased with the results.
Now that my Lynard Skynard is in digital land, I can pretty much have my way with the tracks, listen to it in my car, what-have-you.
Just though I'd throw that out there. I never knew that you could get ANY results without a phono preamp, but with a little bit of sound wizardry, it worked.
