Can a small/medium diaphragm mic be used on vocals or should i invest in an LD? I currently have 2 Rode NT3s - would these work well?

record with them and see if you like it...if not, a LD would definitely be worth a try....

Everything works. Somethings work better than others, that's all. I've listened to some stuff I did some twelve years ago when the only condensor mics I owned were Tascam PE-80 small diaphrams. The vocals still sound great to me. Maybe an Elam-251 or a vintage C-12 would've sounded a little better but it still worked.

I tried the NT-3 once, but to me it sounded thin somehow.. It was under pretty bad circumstances tho. I ended up using an NT-1....

These days I prefer to use my Octava MC012 for vox. (NT-1, NT-3 and SM57 being the alternatives). It's not the "larger than life" sound, but it's full and rich.

I've got a 4033 on the way. I was looking for a good vox/amp mic and thought only a large diaphragm would be suitable, but all the rave I've read here about this mic has made me swing from that premise.

We'll see.

Grip ,your gonna dig the 4033..I've got a V67 and I like the sound of the At a little better ..its more open sounding to me..Good luck

About four months back I recorded a series of songs with Oktava MC 012's and used them for vocals. Backing off some in proximity but going direct rather than off axis in angle and using a pop screen the results were really good.
