SM58 only works with lead half out! Ideas?

Hi everyone.

My new SM58 will only work when the xlr is barely in the mic at all. If I fully connect the lead, I get nothing. So the darn thing has the lead hanging out and barely making contact and that's the only way it'll work.

This ever happened to anyone before? Have I any chance of fixing it?

Unscrew the setscrew that holds the XLR connector in place and check you wiring.
 
+1 use a different cable.

I had a USB cable like that. I had to pull it half out to get it to function. I replaced it with a new cable and all is good. As far as XLR, it could also be the wiring in the mic. But it's more likely the connector on the cable. If it's all the way in, does the response change as you change it's angle relative to the ground? hanging upside down, pointed up, sideways, and whatever configuration there of? If there's a difference with that and it's all the way in, likely the wires in the mic. Otherwise more likely to be the cable IMO.
 
New mic? I agree to try a new cable, if that don't work return the mic, DO NOT open it as this may void the warranty.

I tried another lead first and couldn't get anything. Tried with this lead and got some kind of connection, like I say, with the darn thing barely making contact.

I also tried tightening the wee screw (being mindful of the reverse tread) but it's still not working.

Dammit. Better see if I can get it fixed or whatever.

If it's brand new store bought ..... then it has to be under warranty.
Bring it back for a new one. ;)

Sorry, I meant the screw on the mic. Loosen that and you can pull out the XLR connector. Examine the wiring inside the mic. Is that the what you meant? Is the mic new?

Thanks everyone. But as buzzard bass and moresound said, I'm frightened to open it up in case I void the warranty.

It's going to be a sodding pain to get a refund or exchange because I got it off the internet in November as a Christmas present.

Yeah, yeah, I know! But it looks like the real thing, feels like the real thing, weighs like the real thing and it's got numbered pins and whatever.

Could I have two brand new dodgy leads? How reliable are xlr-to-jack leads in your experience?

IF its a brand new Shure you might be able to contact them and explain the situation.

....then again it might be a counterfeit (they are out there) and then Shure wont help you.

I'd contact Shure, most of these guys have great customer service, they know people get stuff as prezzies at this time of the year. Be prepared to post pics to the reply. Be meek and humble. XLR leads are generally reliable unless you drive your car over them a few dozen times.

BTW, when you contact customer service make sure you're calm, cool and collected. These guys are so used to dealing with irate dicks that a calm customer is a real breath of fresh air.

It prolly is the real thing, keep that in mind. Don't introduce the idea that it's a fake. I'm sure Shure will make you a happy camper.

Looks like it came with all of the right paper work and accessories. I would say that is authentic.

How about a shot of the XLR side. To see if something is amiss ~ but I doubt that one could tell by just looking at it in a picture.
Nice pictures by the way, right in focus.
 
Don't know the SM-58 very well, but looking at the picture, is there a screw missing at the connector end of the mic, possibly the screw that secures the connectors?
 
Thats how they all look, looks genuine to me - out of interest what's om the other side of the cable? xlr-xlr? what are you plugging it into?
