that's what i'm about to drop cash on & wanted to get opinions here before taking the plunge...

i'm trying to set up equipment that can be handed off to my brother for him to record vocal tracks & then have them handed back to me to DL to my PC for editing, etc... so it all has to be pretty small - all fit in a briefcase or something....

just like most others beginning, i'm not trying to spend a lot of money... just about $500 total on the mic/preamp/recorder setup...

i know this isn't giving me studio quality anything - just want decent sound files to play with...

can i get a stamp of approval? am i forgetting anything? do i need a compressor on top of the ART Tube MP Studio V3 preamp?

thanks!

Yo Erudition! Sorry, if I had seen this post befire, I would have responded. For small size and impressive function, the PXR4 rocks! You can talk GC out of them for about $200 these days. Then you need a 128mb Smart media card. The computer geeks can get them for about $36 now. Frankly, you will be amazed at the sound quality you can get from the built in mic. But- you really don't need an outboard pre to use an SM58- just get an unbalanced XLR to 1/4" cable, and jack the mic into the 1/4" in, set for "line". It's a variable impedence input. No reason to dick up one cheap preamp with another cheap preamp. I've had my best luck with a Sony one-point mic made for DAT recording, ECM-MS957. It's a stereo condenser mic that runs on battery power. Then "master" your one vocal track as an MP-2, download to PC by USB port, and rip it to an MP-3 or WAV file for editing. You will also be impressed by the Pandora as a reverb unit. In some ways, the Pandora's EQ section is more sophisticated than my Roland VS1824CD! It has its limits, but it's a great little box.-Richie

That sounds like a fun little package for taking around! I don't know whether I'd be getting an SM58 rather than a Sennheiser E835, but other than that it sounds good. A mic and a Pandora ... can't get much more portable than that!
