hey people just wondering what it would be like to use the SM57 as a vocal recording studio mic? or if the MXL v67G would be better?

You should try it and tell us how it worked on your setup, with your voice, through your preamp, into your recording device, played back through your monitors. Thanks.

Ok mate do you have any of these mics? If not and you are doing vocal I'd go the V67g or one of it's counterparts (SPB1) If you allready have both do what Big Kenny said and please post sound clips.

lol no havent got any was just asking about which you reckon is best lol ok il go for the mxl

WAIT!

Ok the MXL is a good microphone but If you tell us your budget we may be able to steer you towards a better alternative.

dwarf VS Canibus Oh yeah the Battle is guna go down

hmm well im also looking for a preamp and soundcard so mic will probably be around £60-70

I thought you were stuck with those. I don't care for either but both will work. They are microphones and that's what they do. Audio Technica or CAD would be my choice but there are folks who like the MXL. I have a 77 that I adore but that's another price range.

Well it depends on the style of vocals as well... but, the 57 needs a pretty good pre to sound its best.

0o well what style of vocals are suited to those mics then im doing punk rock green day type vocals

In that case either would probably be fine... I'd probably want both :D

I'm probably going out on a limb here and risk looking like an idiot by trying to describe a couple of sounds..

To me a 57 sounds like the singer is singing into a mic that is coming out of the speakers, a little agressive. A condensor sounds like the singer is "in the room with you". I know this seems like a ridiculous explination, but thats knda how it feels to me.

An example of what i think best portrays the dynamic sound that I hear is system of a downs toxicity. I'm not even sure that he uses a dynamic, thats just what it sounds like to me. As for the condensor sound - try QOTSA's latest or even 'songs for the deaf'.

Not that the mics used in the above comparison are going to be considerably more expensive than a 57 or V67

I'm not familiar with much green day, but i'd hazard to guess that they'd be using a condensor.
