Is there a difference between sm57 and sm57beta? Is the beta more dynamic?

The BETA is a hyper "carabioooood". I think that means (excuse the spelling) that the mic focuses on the louder sound and will not pickup the smaller sounds.

Hyper cardioid means that it "hears" pretty much straight ahead; it doesn't hear sounds coming in from the side of the mic as loud as it does coming from the front of the mic. The polar pattern thread in this forum covers this pretty well.

i like the beta for speaker cabs in my home studio becuase of the space in my studio. It isn't exactly the quietest of studio's the whole time, and the beta does well in picking up only the sound from the speaker cab and no power supply, computer, or mini fridge noise.

You can hear the difference in my mic shootout clips - do a search - it's all there! The thread is about 5 days old or so... OldGrover kindly let me leave the clips at his site, so you can still get at them!

You can use anything for vocals. But different voices interact differently with different mics. I did some recording recently where I found that my voice sounded best on my AT3528 (small diaphragm condenser) with foam screen, while the other singer sounded much better recording her with a plain old SM58.
It's usually best to spend some time experimenting with different mics for vocal purposes and understand that there is no one "best" mic for vocals (although there are certainly some which can be promptly discarded as excrement regardless of what voice you're recording).
