Here's the $ 64 question: Can I run that one signal through an outboard preamp with phantom power turned off, and keep the board hot for everything else? Will phantom power pass through an outboard preamp? I think the answer is no (it will not pass through), but I don't want to test the theory on her violin...

Here's an easy way to test it; try the setup with a condensor that NEEDS phantom power. If the condensor works as it is supposed to, you can kick my ass next year.

Phantom power will NOT go thru an outboard pre. In fact, your outboard pre might get DAMAGED TOO if you hook it up to a mic pre feeding it phantom power! Read the manual of the outboard pre to get this cleared out.

The thing you can do is feed the outboard pre to a channels line input instead of a micinput on your board. That will help you get rid of all your worries. The output of a micpre is at line level anyway.

Electronics? What do I know... I'm just a musician!

yea it is.. tho i already have to give up the idea of building cables - unless i want another expensive hobby..

i really hate to live here, everything seems to damn expensive - if i would build my own cables (just average and below quality) it would still be far more expensive than buying the cheap (but i like them alot) cables at thomann.de!

so that doesnt really make sense for me.. although i would really like to do that..

I started buying cheapass cables too... For less than 2$ for a 3m jack-jack cable, jee, why would you want anything else. It's not that this is going to degrade my soundquality when doing mostly liveshows. And at this price, I can buy about 9 extra spare cables for the price of one decent cable. So who cares if they break.
