Would an sm 57 be good for micing a bass amp? if not
what would be the best mic to do so in your opinion??

A 57 will work ok, a kick drum mic is also really good to use (d112,beta52, e602) also try going direct out into a direct box and mix the two.

One of the few microphones that actually has an enhanced bass response is the Beyerdynamic M88TG. If you were buying a mic just for micing a bass cabinet it might be a fine choice.
