sm-57 on kick?

hey, i'm recording drums and only have four channels and a 4 piece set with hats/crash/ride. i have two old teac condensers that work very well. do you think it would sound good if i used those two for overheads and panned them, and bought two 57's for the kick and snare? i know 57s are great for snare, but do they work that well on bass? i want lots of low end, but don't have that much money.

Hey man.
I use a 57 on the bass drum. It works, I guess, and for the same price ($90) theres not much else you could go with. I too am lookin for a big bass sound, but this mic wont really do it for you. It can sound ok, but for the pounding bass youre gonna need something like an AKG D112.

Definately go with it on that snare. That should work great.
 
The last Red Hot Chilie Peppers album used a 57 in the kick.

Audio technica makes a kick mic, the RC-PRO 25, and it goes as low as 30 Hz. I haven't used it, but you can find it through catalogs at around $90, retail $160. Seems to spec better for bass than a 57 would.

sm58 is the same exact mic electronically, but because of it's shell it accenuates the bass more, practically everyone on here will tell you that. for like 10 bucks more you'll get a better bass drum mic and you can use it as a vocal mic too for the same reason. sm57's work great for snares and toms so i'd get one of each. sm57's are mainly for that and micing brass or other solo instruments, or amps. we out.
 
I like the 57 for kick. The 58 sounds muddy. You can always EQ the thump in, which is no big deal since you will probably want to EQ the hell out of the kick anyway.
