Returned from the dead
Not my song, and I'm not even done tracking all the bass yet. Still needs vocals (I'm still mustering up the testicular fortitude to sing :o)

Mainly what I'm wanting feedback on right now is how is the song coming together, how is the mix, how do the instruments sound?

Sleep Apnea.mp3

On another note, I'm not sure but I think reaper is screwing up the rendered file. The mp3 plays fine on my daw PC but on my laptop it just stops like halfway through. Let me know if you experience any problems./

Sounds like it close to being decent, but it's muddy and cheap sounding. It very much lacks the clean low end and the airy highs and mega-clarity of cheesy-slick commercial modern metal mixes. I think it's something in the guitars. Maybe it's bad mic placement or bad sim choice. They just have that cheap home recorded sound. Like it's a cheap mic on a bad spot on a cheap amp. Know what I mean? They don't have that big tube ballsy punch.

And yeah, the file stops at 1:16.

I know exactly what you mean but I've just about come to grips with the fact that theres almost nothing I can do about that now without dropping some bucks on a new amp rig.
I'm trying though, I just wanna record music.

That's cool, but it's not terrible, so I think you can fix it or at least make it much better. Try an amp sim.

Damnit... I shoulda recorded DI tracks. And I really wish I could just get my amp to sound better... But the good news is I think I might know how to fix it.

sounds a good job Nic...drums sounded good and I didnt think the guitar was far off...dunno if its of any interest but I got a v-amp pro recently and I think it rocks...better than my pod for sure, though my playings still shite :)

Still cut short and that's a shame too, because it was really starting to rock out. I like where this one is going man. I would like to hear the vocals on it. That's the thing that I can't get on my tracks either.

I think I'm eventually just going to give it a whirl myself and see how that comes out. I think you should maybe go for it too. Who the hell knows it might be the best thing ever. :)

Anyways, I hope you get this file fixed because I want to hear it all.

Haha damn...this almost sounds a demo version of the original. I'm a big Chevelle fan myself. Sounds pretty sweet. I can hear the vocals man!

I think it sounds great!

I just can't f*cking figure out why it's cutting short! The rendered MP3 plays fine on my DAW PC after rendering but after transferring to other PC's the song cuts off half way through.

Here's ONE more try with the guitars re-re-re-tracked with a different tone: Sleep Apnea.mp3

I'm just waiting on the final word from greg or KCearl that it's good to go before I continue any further.

I wouldnt wait on my opinion lol, Im clueless with this kind of stuff...but what was finished sounded good to me, and the file played the entire way through

Were the guitars in the last clip any better than the guitars in the first clip? and is it still muddy and cheap sounding?

And as far as I'm concerned, you and greg are the authorities in the mixing clinic. I know that you know when you're hearing a well balanced and clear mix and when you're hearing 3 minutes of crap :)

it sounded much better...its a little unpolished when its on its own but when everythings in full swing its sounded good....I reckon a bit of EQing will fatten it up when its on its own, maybe one of the guitarists would have a suggestion, maybe some automated compression at the beginning would do it???

I think the music will work as long as you track some pretty decent vocals that really set up from.

I did notice the guitar cutting kinda abruptly at the end of the chorus.....might wanna roll them off instead.

Remember that with guitars & bass it's not what it sounds like when playing that matters. It's what it sounds like inside the song.
You like your amp more BUT it's not paying dividends & you can't afford an upgrade sooooooo try a couple of passes through the vamp and see if any tracks you produce from it fit better into the mix.
There's a sticky somewhere in the forum about recording distorted guitars & it's quite good/helpful/instructive.
Don't fret, work around the problem. We'd all like to mic our amps & get THAT sound but it doesn't often come off. Greg gets excellent git sounds - listen then ask him - you'll be surprised by the how!
By the way it's Apnoea though you may have a licence poetic for other arrangements of the letters.
