simple question about alesis DM10 pro hi hat pedal set up?

Is the cable supposed to be stereo or mono? I have tried both and went into the configuration both times and set up the open closed settings? When it says opened and closed does that mean for open I should have my foot off of the pedal and for closed I should put it on correct? Because I have tried everything to get my hi-hat pedal to work but it wont do anything... When it works is it supposed to make a sound when I open and close the hi-hat pedal even without me touching the hi-hat? SO far I have heard nothing so I am just curious.... Also I read online not to touch the pedal until you get into the set up screen so I no that already.
