I've been homerecording for about a year, but I recently got set-up kinda sorted...

I bought a new sound card and have installed it on my laptop, Im using Adobe Audition to record but everytime I attempt to record, the laptop records everything its outputting AND everything on the mic. (Its not a condenser mic, so I know its not from the headphones (its a Shure Sm58))... I've tried adjusting the sound settings in my windows mixer but cant seem to get the combination right to stop this. Can anyone tell me more about this?

Someone told me its also possible that I have "routed my sound wrong" and "left a path open", but I dont know how to fix this... Im using a very simple Creative Soundblaster Soundcard (see here... http://hardvision.ru/new_img/articles/face6.jpg) and Windows 2000 Office Pro... (and adobe audition 1.5)...

This has been driving me crazy for about 2weeks... HELP!

The answer has something to do with checking or un-checking a box called "what you hear". I can't remember more than that, but it's kind of an FAQ for Creative Labs soundcards. Your problem is typical of just about everyone starting out with that card.

I never used the external, but I had the Soundblaster Live! 24-bit card for awhile. This is what I had to do:

First of all, plug your microphone or whatever you're recording from, into the LINE IN jack. (Mine used the same jack for microphone/line-in).

Then, to setup for recording, go to the Windows mixer.

You should be on the playback settings. Mute/unmute Line-In. If it is muted, you won't be able to hear what you're recording. If it's unmuted (for recording over a track) then you can monitor what you're recording as it's being recorded.

Then go to: Options -> Properties, select "Recording" and click OK.

Make sure the box under "Line In" is checked. This will record everything coming from Line In.

You probably have it set to "What U Hear" or "Stereo Mix" or whatever it's called on your card.

Hope this helps.
