Signal Routing confusion

Here's what I want to do:

overdub a guitar track onto a mix while listening to that mix and the new track playing back only in the headphones, not the monitors.

here's what I have:
guitar >> behringer eurorack ub802 as preamp/mixer >> Maudio 2496 card >> monitors

the monitors are actually a home stereo system with line i/o.

again, i want to mute the monitors while I'm overdubbing and have the mix come through headphones only.

is it possible to do without manually disconnecting the monitors from the stereo amp?

I'm not familiar with that mixer, but I'm assuming it has a headphone out?

If so you could try routing the soundcard outs back into the mixer's Tape In, and then from Tape Out to your amp for monitoring. Now you can plug your phones into the mixer and just turn off your amp when you don't want the monitors

i was thinking that too, but wasnt sure if it'd work.

however, i am a certified idiot because of this one minor fact:

when you plug in headphones to the stereo, the speakers automatically shut off (like they do on every other stereo out there). problem solved. doh.
