Different but just as good. Probably more versatile, because it has the built-in tone controls a lot or people don't realize it has (It's got a bass rolloff swith and a presence boost switch). It's basically just a much better-sounding SM-57.

A lot of people like it on toms, but it works great for snare, too. Just not very common to use it there, I guess.

it's kinda big, IMO, to task it with snare duties in a drumset configuration. i certainly wouldn't want that mic potentially in harm's way of a wandering stick. personally, an sm57 is even a little too big with some of the drummers i've seen.

now, for concert snare (orchestra-type) recording, that's a different story.....but then again, i can't imagine why you'd want to be close-micing a snare in that kind of scenario. give me a couple room mics in a nice room and i'll be happy with that.

I just bought my second SM-7.

It's been a versatile mic for me on vocals (VO and sung)especially. But I've used it on some percussion (conga, bongos).

I did try it on snare (underneath) and it was okay, but didn't make it past mixing. Sounded great but snare was too "big" for that mix.

It certainly is along the lines of the '57 but with a much more refined quality to it. Switches make it very flexible, as Chess said.
