I would like to know which mic excels in which areas, or whether one just totally completely beats the other.

This is going to be applied to heavy, loud, baritone guitars in drop A and A standard, and Drop C and, D and C standard.

It's going to be used with a rectoverb head and a 2x12 vin. 30 cab

hrrmmm...i guess i'm not used to waiting this long for replies :\

is this not a super active forum?

There seems to be more activity during the daytime...but to answer your question, you'll really need to try each of the various mics out. It's all about what you'll prefer...what...not the answer you wanted? :D

I like my e609s for heavy stuff. It's a bit brighter and I always end-up using a low-pass filter during the mixing stage. Another option is to either use both, or take a gander at the senny 421 or maybe a ribbon mic. I've heard some great git recordings with those too.

Recording a lot of barritone stuff the e609 might help to eliminate a lot of muddiness in the bottom. The e609 is a little "thin" sounding to me. (and some others) compared to even a 57. On the other hand I feel the 57 is overall a better mic. I just got an e609 a few weeks ago, maybe just haven't found it's uses yet, while I've been working with 57's forever and know exactly what they are. So far I like the e 609 on really clean guitar sounds and really high gain guitar sounds, somewhere in the middle I find myself wanting something else. If you can listen to them both, then pick the on you like. You really can't go wrong just going out and buying a 57 though.

lawl at uber late post

That's the best thing to do, after gathering some info. Basically, after you find out whether something is a complete piece of shit or not (neither of these mics are) you gotta try it to see if it works for what you want to do.

I agree. I like my SM57 better than my e609. I actually sold the e609 just the other day. I heard some clips of a comparison of the SM57 and Audix i5 from Andy Sneap, and the i5 sounded really good. I'm going to get one of those here soon.

how do u test out mics in a store ? :| specially Recording Mics? :|

I notice all the responses mention the E609, but your original question stated the E906.

I have a 609, but I dont have a 906. The reason I got the 609 is because I think they are the same mic. The 906 has some switches and pads or presence boosting or something in it, but I'm not willing to pay another $250 bucks just to add a couple of switches to a 609. I would bet folding $$$$$$$ if you take away the switches and the $250 bells and whistles, the two mics would be indistinguishable.

Dont get the 906 unless you really have a pressing need for the extra glitter on those switches. The 609 will do everything you ask of it.

On the other hand, is it as good as or better than the SM57?? I dont think so. Some mics you should consider for your amp mic'ing are listed here, in order of my personal preference based on how accurately they recreate what I hear coming from my amp..... Of course, you must consider all variables, especially mic placement and style of music. No one mic is perfect for every different sound and every different song that might come out of your amp. But if I could only pick one it would be the EV...

EV ND468 $140
SM57 $90
E609 $90
AKG D770 $60

If I was going to choose just one, I would have to go with the e609. I just like the sound of it better. For me, it seems less muddy.

HOWEVER...you can't beat the sound of an SM57 AND an e609 used at the same time.

Someone on the forums did a shoot-out between the two mics and then used them both at once. Search for it. It's a pretty good comparison. You'll also see why I prefer using both at the same time.

BINGO! I agree SM57 + E609 make a great balanced sound. One thing I like to do beyond that is to add a third mic (LDC) 3 to 5 feet out front and about 2 to 3 feet above the center line of the speakers. That seems to work very nicely with my main CAB and room.

lol i missed that. It's too easy to get those confused in print. They should have named them something else. :o

Hey, wow thanks for all the posts guys. I was kinda just thinking the thread was done and over with.

Yah you could consider it EXTREMELY hard, to ever test out a mic at Hermes, but i was gonna go and try and see if i could. But thats the whole point of the forum. To help guide me in a 'good' direction.

I think i'll just go for the shure sm57 and e609 then.

Btw, for anyone else is musicianforums not working? I think the server went down :\
