Ay wutup people, I'm thinking of picking up a studio condenser microphone within the next few dayz... i'm mostly going to be reocording rap and r&b. Anyways I've done some research and I really like the Shure KSM27 and the Audio Technica 4040 but I just cant make my mind on which one I want. They both seem great! If you guys have any suggestions or input on which one is better for my situation, I would greatly appreciate it. Oh and I was also thinking of buying the Tascam US122 or the MAudio MobilePre 2x2 16-Bit 48kHz, they are both USB compatible pre amps, and are supposedly good for laptop recording. ANy input on either one of these? Anyways thanks again guys, and I will appreciate your help.

I think they're pretty similar-sounding mics of similar quality.

I'd just get whichever one you can get the best deal on. Either way, you wind up with a really good mic, and really good value for the dollar.

I was just like you a few months ago, trying to chose one over the other. I needed a good Voice-Over mic and went for the AT4040. So far no regrets! It's like farting through silk dude! Clean and smooth!

I have the AT4040, but I've heard good things about the KSM27 as well. I only went with the AT because I found a good deal on it.

me too

I deliberated between the the SP C1 and the AT4040. I bought the 4040 and have no regrets. I'm sure the KSM27 is a good mic just as the C1 is well regarded.

My advice, if you can't try them out, make an educated choice and don't second guess yourself.

Ight thanks guys I appreciate all your advice and input greatly! And it looks like I'm just going to buy the mic that I can get the best deal on. Thanks guyz!

I have 2 AT4040s, I use them for everything. They sound great on drum overheads, most vocals (sometimes they're a little "revealing" for some vox), guitars, etc etc. id reccomend em

the at 4040 is a great mic. i have one that i use for vocals, electric guitar, and kick drum, and it sounds great on all of them. they're very versitle.

I guess I'm the only oddball here with a KSM27.

I like it on singing/rap vocals my other option is the Oktava MK-319 which I really like on rappers with deep voices.

If you're in the UK you'll pay £60 to £110 more for the Shure than the AT.

So, is the KSM27 worth that much more than than the AT4040?

Although I don't have the AT4040, it seems to be a tad bit more populator on these forums.

I own the KSM27 and really like it. It works well on females and acoustic guitar. I generally pick the AT3035 over the KSM27 for my particular voice. YMMV

I'd say both of these mics are in the same range of build quality and sound. If you can get the AT4040 for substantially cheaper, than go for it. Buy used, if possible.
