Shure 58 vs Beta 58a - what's the difference??

After reading up a bit on mics for under $300 (searching on this board) it sounds like I'd be better off just buying a decent dynamic until I can afford a REAL mic...vs buying a low end condenser now.

Shopping around the net for Shures' 58 I also found a Shure Beta 58a which is supposed to be geared towards vocals (my main use). Does anyone know what the difference is between these two mics and which would be better suited for vocals?? Price diff is @ $90 vs. $170. I can afford both but is the Beta really that much better?? Does it have a different sound? Clearer / Warmer / Brighter??

zip, yes, there is a noticeable difference between the Beta58 and the SM58 - which are both geared towards vocals. The Beta 58 is essentially an upgrade to the SM58 though many people still prefer the SM for whatever reasons. The Beta is a good deal louder than the SM and has a tighter pickup pattern which means less feedback should you use it correctly. In terms of sonic differences, I would suggest that if you feel you fairly strong voice that can cut through the mix, the SM58 would be more than adequate. If you like a bit more of a boost in the upper-mids than maybe go for the Beta58. Anyhow, be sure to try out each before you buy.

Speaking of Shure mics...

... What about the sm 57? How much better is the BETA 57 than the regular 57, can it be worth the extra $$.

--One more quicky; Is it better to use a condensor or a dynamic if I use 2 mics on my guitar amp, One up close and One far back.

Not sure about the 57 vs beta 57 but I did read somewhere on this board that you can use a SM57 up close and a condenser to capture room effect...

thanks for the input. I've got a VERY strong voice so a 58 will probably do. I wonder if there is a difference in tonal quality vs just signal strength??? Hmmmmm....guess I will have to find a place to demo 'em. Tough in Cincy....not many good music stores.
