Showcase your best song!

Well, finally this one's taking off a little; this thread was started weeks ago, as I recall. Most people post their new stuff down in the mp3 clinic a few topics down. You can hear a pretty decent cross section scrolling through there. I just haven't posted there because so many of my mixes are terrible and in formats where I can't really modify them without a lot of work. Whatever critique I could get on my mixes wouldn't do me much good as of right now, so I'm waiting until I get something new done. So far I've mostly concentrated on songcraft more than sound quality, so this seemed like the right forum to post in.

The difference between this thread and the mixing clinic is I want to focus more on song-writing aspect of the music over the mixing and recording process. Without a good song youll never have a good recording. So you have made the right choice choosing this thread :D.

I'm a newbie at this forum and I'm surprised at how few songs are posted here in this thread. I'm assuming that people who do home recording actually have songs recorded.:p Maybe I'm missing something, but I count about a zillion members here and not too many songs.

Most people post their songs in the MP3 clinic. The intent of that forum is to allow constructive feedback on the song, not so much as a showcase. This thread, started by DAS19 (nice idea btw), asks to post your favorite/best effort.

And thanks for you comments on Stranded. :)

Cheers,

For the record, I don't think it's hamming, but I'm guessing he's referring to your vocal style. It seems to me that you're just aiming for something different than most of the rest of us, so you have a different kind of expression in your voice. A little less like the stuff I've been hearing on the radio lately and an little more Sam Cooke, or Nat King Cole. That's what I'm hearing. It's a little outside my usual genre, but I think you're doing a good job of what you're doing, especially if you really are mixing all this stuff in GarageBand. And I like your keyboard work a lot. That's why I haven't had much to say about your music; I can't so far think of anything useful to add.

Cheers

I use to impersonate Nat King Cole for my mum when I was a kid so it must have stuck - I usually get Bowie (who I use to impersonate professionally), occasionally Nick Cave, but never Nat before.

Thanks for the up on the keys; after years of writing on the guitar I got back to ivory about 6 months ago and have found it liberating. I've got about 5 more songs to put up - all of those are guitar in origin and are subsequently more rock/blues.

I won't record the final CD on GB (I use a Korg 32Tr hard Drive) but I'll take the keys and drums out of the box, then redo guitars and vocals. The trick with GB, I think like all recording, is in the compression and loads of free AU plug-ins!!!

Im writing and recording a tune today which isnt ready yet however I have a bunch of songs done already...I will post a link in the next post because I cant post links on this forum until I have 5 posts...just joined today.

Here is my artists page at mp3.com...Ive only been recording for about 7 months off and on however ive been playing guitar and lead guitar for 24 years...in my mid to later 30's right now so my music may have a retro feel to it sometimes...I write all different types of songs so if dont like the first one you hear just click another.

Whatmysay,

Awesome stuff man. I really like you style. The memory of skin is my favorite so far. I like the keys and the lyrics are great. "Let's buy a shop on saturn's rings....." Awesome line.

I haven't listened to them all but I bookmarked your page and will give them all a listen when I have more time.

I like your voice I can definitely hear the David Bowie similarity.

Do you play and record all the parts yourself?

Cheers for the close listening. Yes I play all parts I have no friends! - I try to save up to buy friends, but then I see a new fx pedal or some bit of kit and I spend it on that instead. I bought a Theremin yesterday so there goes another 2 years without friends.

I've been in bands, problem is here in HK most original bands (and there are only a few of those) are Cantonese/Mandarin speakers - I can jam but not really write. Most Gwailos (white ghost) already have real jobs and only want to play covers to their friends in finance. So I'm stuck in the middle.

Still with great threads like this running the collaboration is happening anyway.

This is a pretty crappy mix. The vocals and gutars were recorded "live" at practice the drums were programmed and bass was recorded later. We are planning on re-recording this on Sunday.

It's our favorite song and we have a lot of fun with it.

The song is called Perfect Demon.

I'm on my 3rd listen as I write - you guys have really got it going on - this is definitely the first single of the album.

Great main riff and then the variation under the chorus really bites. Is it just 2 of you or is your drummer a bit of a Ringo that you need to reprogram? Hope the recording goes well and you get the right takes down to give this the full works in production. You've got to push your vocals up more as you have great tone and it really contrasts with the second voice.

What fx are you using on the lead? That it the sort of huge guitar sound I want to get on some of my tracks - but the best I ever seem to get is 80s metal! I just can't let go of the spandex.

Post the finished version up on here

Love is Risky - is 80s version of 60's retro pop - I don't remember the 60s (because I wasn't there! DOB '67) but I sure remember the 80s and loads of toe-tap 60s covers with synth and chorused guitar.

1/2 Life and Black Mammoth - get your MXR phaser (or are you using the EVH special?) out and rock. Too cool

You were right I was wrong - just take me back to adolescent adventures in the suburbs of Sydney. I love the JMJ Vox drums.

Way it goes - classic Pink Floyd

Your material is tight, well structured, with great progressions and riffs. Its at this point you probably think this guy is 'taking the piss'. Your material made me smile and happy because for any Gen-X this is pure nostalgia! The question is where do you want to go with it?

Do you want to continue with the sound of your youth or do you want to develop it for a contemporary and possible 'mid to late 30s' audience?

About 4 years ago I hated that I sounded so eighties so I went back to my hero (pardon the pun) Bowie and listen to how he evolved - I think he is better now than in the 80s - and more recently listen to Snow Patrol, Keane, The Killers or The Editors to here that 80s influence. With a bit of tweaking a bit less chorus/flanger you could create a very now sound. You have a genuine quality about your tracks and they are catchy even without vocals.

All this I say with no judgement on what you have done because I love and would like to collaborate on lyrics with you - if you don't already have some or just intended them to be instrumentals.

Thanks for making my night. No I haven't been drinking but I will now.

Cheers

Burt

Thanks for saying you like the tunes...everytime I write a song I write it for lyrics/vocals...i usually write part of the lyrics and I have a melody however I dont record vocals yet...I need a decent mic and preamp and even then I would rather have a real singer sing to my tunes instead of me...I can hold a note however im not a powerfull singer...Do you sing?.

My style is retro...Im kind of stuck in a time warp i think...I thought about a more modern sound however Im afraid I would sound like everyone else and lose my own thang so to speak.

I wouldnt mind doing a collaboration with a singer...If I did a collaboration i would just write a whole new song and start from scratch just to have something fresh and new to work on...

Thanks man glad you like it!

There are 3 of us rythm and lead guitar and me on vox. We actually have a new bassist coming over on Sunday to jam with us a bit. So we are excited about that. Just need a drummer and we are set.

The guitar is a behringer v-amp2. I'm not sure exactly what effect set he is using. I think it's juts distortion and chorus. We never mess with the amp and cabinet sims just the effects and preamp. I'll ask him on Sunday what the full effects chain is. As far as the production goes I rolled off the extreme low end and boosted the mids a bit then compressed the hell out of it.

I'm actually still pretty self conscious about my voice. I just recently started singing and I tend to push the vocals down a bit in the mix, although this is one of the first song I have recorded that I'm actually pretty proud of the vocals.

Thanks for the listen, I'll be sure to post the finished product after we record the new tracks.

I think I have heard some of your stuff before. I don't think your stuff sounds dated but then again I'm about the same age.:o

You really wail on that guitar man, I am impressed. I'd love hear some of the vocals.

I particular like uptown/downtown. very nice groove.

I'll give your tracks a more careful listen tomorrow while I get the studio ready for our recording session on Sunday.

Good stuff man keep it up.

That's my band. Take a listen. Thanks.

great sound - love the Lou Reed laid back vocal delivery it counterpoints the dynamics of the frenzy of the guitar - sometimes the rythm section drifts out a bit, but it usually gets back in a few bars, but hey it is a rough.

I'd love to hear some of this stuff fully produced as I think these songs deserve it.

Good luck with it

Burt

trying again

FORBIDDEN Link for me - I'm quite aroused by what the content might be now!

Sorry to keep posting links to the same song; just never sure if anybody could see it in its usual location. See if this one works:

Nice

here's a link to the best song i've worked on yet.

I love this. It was so unexpected. If I had any suggestions and I know this is hard to do cause we want to include every bit of what we wrote… shorten it up a bit and maybe add some animated sounds (think Bob Ezrin-Alice Cooper) Know what I mean?

Hello folks

This place looks like a place I can get some wisdom.
Here's a song I wrote recently. Critiques..are welcomed! :)

It's at lifedemo.com and it's the one entitled "She doesn't love you anymore"

We just released this new stuff with our rock trio.

The band was recorded with six mics.

Vocals with a 1976 Sennheiser MD 421.

On a TASCAM 424 mkii.

undrgrnd studio:

"No one likes hippies in Montana" great line, song sounds good.

I love that you did this on a cassette recorder. You guys rock!

Hey Kay, Nice song, really nice song. well played and sung. The strummed guitar is just a little strong and prevents the words from being clearly heard. I didn't hear any distracting background noises. I was just diggin the tune.

Cheers,
