Hey, I'm curious where you guys stand on this topic. I read an article a few days ago said that the MPA has declared tab sites "completely illegal." Two of the big sites - MxTabs & Taborama - have been taken down.

So, what's your opinion?

The tabs on most tab sites are so inaccurate they should be illegal.

Hix is right. Most tabs I find on-liine are a complete waste of time. I think they should be legal though as I can't see how it injures the original artist. If you pay a teacher to show you a song, will the tab police come in and arrest him/her? It's bullshit and going too far.

Then again, I wish tab sites would check their work.

Ain't it the truth. I printed off the tab to a song and used it to learn a bass part. Then I played along with the original, which was in G. It had been tabbed in D!

Yea, it is getting pretty freaky the way the govt is letting big business criminalize copyright infringement. Next thing, they will be arresting school teachers for making copies of handouts.

Agreed. I believe in artists/songwriters getting their fair share for their work... but when will this end? What's next, if you play a CD at your home and you have friends over, you have to pay public performace fees? Whew, Garth Brooks tried a few years back, wanting to collect royalites from USED CD's that were being sold at garage sales..etc. Can't these fools see that if their music is so popular that people are wanting to play it themselves is because someone, most likely the person wanting to learn the tune, has already bought the CD..?

About the tabs being incorrect: If you are downloading from a free site, and they are incorrect, demand a refund! If you are a paying member of a site that provides you with tabs and they are incorrect, do the same...demand a refund!

I agree that most of the free tabs available are inaccurate. This is one reason why I don't think that it is a copyright infringement. You are dealing with an individual's interpretation of the music not an un-authorized copy of the music. The millionares are getting a little too ridiculous with copyrights now. Like Garth Brooks doesn't make enough already. Next thing you know, we won't be allowed to play cover tunes in clubs anymore. Go ahead and try that, millionares. You'll have to send out the copyright army to stop me from playing out!

Someone has to explain to me where the loss to the artist is? even if the tab was 100% correct. Where is the loss?

So I download some tab, learn to play a beatles song. Lets say its not even for my own enjoyment, which I bet 95% are, but I want to play this song live. So I play this song at a club, and even one single person says, you know? I was going to by that album, but F it, I'll just listen to this guy play it.

Give me a break.

I used tab since I was a kid to help learn to play guitar. I would bet the learning how to play the songs you like goes a long way to the amount of musicians there are today, most of which grew up to respect music and the artists.

I have yet to see online a full arrangement of a song. More like the verse is GDACBFC and here's the little fill at the beginning 3, 5 564, 345 34 blah blah

You telling me that anyone in their right mind, that isn't greedy as the devil himself is going to tell you this is wrong?

I buy the music I like, and support the artists I love. I'll say this though, they keep it up, and I'll download everything. I'm starting to really not care if Coldplay (for example) makes another million bucks, perhaps when everybody says screw you, the huge artists are struggling like the rest of us, the money hungry labels etc, might just be forced to die, and music can be for the people again.

Well, theres my rant for the week.

What a joke

I do agree that the tabs are horribly inaccurate, but I think they are a great thing. Learner guitarists can get a hell of a lot out of tab, even if its slightly inaccurate. I know when I started playing 12 years ago I spent most of my time learning other peoples tunes from tab off the net. Which helped me learn by filling in blanks or inaccuracies in the tab.

How the fuck can it be considered some sort of crime for some kid to learn to play the tunes of his favourite band? I mean Jesus Christ what the fuck is that? Aren't there more worthy causes for prosecution like mass genocide or illegally gaining power by vote rigging?

Holy shit! How must Led Zep feel about Stairway to Heaven? Someone must have learnt to play it with all the no stairway signs? Still they should be 'no Teen Spirit' signs now.

Dyou think Metallica care how many people jam out 'The Four Horsemen' or 'Enter Sandman' in their garage? I know that if I was in their position, and I knew the kids were jamming out my tunes for fun, it would make me feel damn good.

Are these people seriously worried about being ripped off? I mean, do they not realise that anyone who is in a position to rip someone off and make money out of it can probably work it out themselves anyway.

I mean what are they going to do next? Ban anyone without a license from playing guitar incase they are skilled enough to figure out a fuckin blink 182 tune or something? Well I guess most of us are completely fucked then! (nothing against blink its just to highlight my point). But I'm sure a lot of us on this board, if we want to figure out how to play something, for fun or whatever, we just figure it out on our own without tab. I guess that makes us all potential criminals then? What a joke.

Ranting aside, its probly so the greedy bastards who make those overpriced tab books can secure sales. Lets hope for all those aspiring musicians out there that they drop the fuckin price of them as a result.

I can't beleive it...how the hell is a kid supposed to learn without money now. I never had lessons, just learnt from tabs, there are a lot people out there who do the same, not they can't, and I think thats a sick shame. Society is supposed to encourage talent and creativity, not try to snuff it out.

Well, the friend that I've been teaching to play guitar ain't going to learn anymore tunes from me...I ain't going to jail for no man :p (jk)

Tabs should be banned.

They corrupt our youth.

And lead to devil worship.

I heard that if you read tabs backwards, you can see a picture of the devil.

Ok, first of all I do think that the industry is going a little too far with this. But at the same time I don't care all that much, because internet tabs are so completely worthless. For the most part, anyway. Every now and then you might happen across a transcription from someone who actually knows what they're doing. But that's rare.

I really think people should try and focus on using their ears. If you really want to learn songs go out and buy books that teach you music. Learn theory. Learn all the chords. Learn the tools that will allow you to figure out things on your own. Sit down and put some actual time and effort into learning your instrument. You'll be better off for it in the long run.

hehe, there just greedy. Why do they have to worry about inacurate shitty tabs? Dont they have something better to do?

Mxtabs, boards, and cd reviews are the best

I think I will find a way to copyright all A chords...I will own them, and no one else can ever play an A chord unless I give permision, and get some royalties..... :D

Sorry, Too Late

I just applied for a patent on the whole 12 tone system. ;)

I personally don't give a rat's ass 'cause I can't read tab. :o

The fact that songwriters and performers make millions has NOTHING to do with it. Just because someone makes millions doesn't mean that people have a right to steal from them.

If the artists created their own authorized tabs, they'd be able to reap the $$ rewards. Bullshit songbooks are always wrong anyway- I mean an authorized tab like off their own website, etc.- just like the song downloads.

Everyone freaked out when cassettes came out- unlmited copies. Then CD's...then DVD's. Like any other free market, innovators will survive- the rest go to 8-track heaven with all the other El Caminos.

Don't put some poor shmuck who can't figure the song out anyway share it with someone for free- it's just obnoxious. Tab sites and Napster are two different worlds.

*Soapbox closed for repairs*

Tabbing is not illegal, and shouldn't be. End of story!

Oh yeah, THE MPAA CAN SUCK IT!
:D

Hey, if any kids saw one of my bands shows and they came up to me and wanted to cover one of our originals I'd be happy to email them the tab to play it and add in the lyrics. I don't think I'd put tab up on a a band web page but I do not have a problem giving them to people who want to cover my songs.
