Hi, it has been recommended to me that I get the Cubase package for my iBook G4. There's a package where you get the hardware I need, the software, and it's Midi compatible, all for like $400. That sounds good to me. I believe it's called System 4. Anybody used it and have recommendations? Also, it's USB, not Firewire - is that a big deal? Is there anything in that ballpark that would be a better value? Thanks!!

Maybe you should check this out ;) The software is great But I dont think the interface has all the bugs worked out, and plus I would not use USB for recording, Its getting better but I dont think it is there yet. Get software, different interface.

cubase on G4

I agree. Cubase is great but that bundled hardware solution will only be a temporary "learning" solution at best. I would look for a firewire sound card interface, this will serve you much better and may also have a built in midi interface. I use a MOTU 828 mkII but there are others less expensive.... M-Audio has some decent firewire interfaces that should fit the budget. Try using Cubase SL, you probably don't need the "SX" version. With this type of combination you'll have a solid system to expand for maybe the same money or just a little bit more. Firewire is definitely better. You'll save in the long run...

fyi.... just one possible answer...

FireWire Audiophile is a compact, FireWire-compatible audio/MIDI interface that takes the legacy of M-Audio’s award-winning Audiophile line to the next level. 4 x 6 audio I/O combines with powerful on-board mixing in a mobile package that’s perfect for live performance, home recording, and digital DJ work. Stereo headphone output with A/B switching between assignable sources allows precuing for DJs and mobile musicians—and the assignable aux bus is perfect for creating dedicated headphone mixes and effect sends. You also get zero-latency hardware direct monitoring, ultra-low latency ASIO software direct monitoring, and 1 x 1 MIDI I/O. FireWire Audiophile even has AC-3 and DTS passthrough for surround sound playback.
