I have been doing the sound system at my church for a few years now. All we use the sound system for is reinforcement of talking. We have a new minister that likes to scream into the mike and a few seconds later whisper, so that it is impossible for me to keep the level lound enough for the congretation to hear when he whispers and soft enough that when he screams that they will keep their ears.

Anyways should I get a compressor and if so what kind.

We would also like this to be an auto volume control for all of the mics for when I am not there.

Thanks for the help

Yes

You damn skippy you want a compressor. Get a behringer, cheap and good. You'll want to set it up while he's screaming to get your levels right.

I also think a compressor would be good in this application. Try and get one with a limiter perhaps, which will be particularly good for keeping a roof over this guys screams. This will save the congregations ears. Many compressors have this combination of : compressor, limiter, and noise gate. Good luck.

Since quality isnt as critical here as recording, get the Alesis 3630 sure you may hear it kick in on tape but in this case they wont, and even if they did they wouldnt know it ;-) Pick one up on Ebay for under $100 bucks, and in my opinion it will do just fine for this aplication. Recording with it kinda blows but ya know, it has its use.

Have you hugged your Meek today?
