Hi guys

I'm an awful singer but have to produce a song with my guitar for a project. Is there any FREE software available thats relatively easy to use that would enable my awful attempts at singing to sound in tune?

I've had a longish look around and can't find anything that will simply allow me to tweak my voice so it sounds in tune.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Alex :)

Hi! Thanks a lot for that. It's kind of similar to N track of Fl studio.

I have just presssed the record button and recorded my vocals and guitar playing but I can't seem to find how to adjust the voals so they sound 'in tune'? Is there a way of doing that?

Thanks again :)

Nothing you use is going to sound natural, but if you must, you must.

Take a look at the software you are using. Check the effects list. You may have something already installed that will do just that. If you are good enough at hearing the correct pitch, you may be able to use a pitch shifter on the bad parts to nudge them back.

But there is no software out there that will make Larry The Cable Guy sound like Elvis Presley. No matter what they promise.

Anteres Autotune is out there, and it comes in software and hardware. But I suspect it would be out of the price range.

I haven't heard of anything that's free, but if you're thinking of purchasing something, Melodyne has a better rep than Autotune.

Singing in tune is an obtainable goal. You'll be able to do it with practice. Do a little googling, there's some sites that give advice on how to teach yourself to sing.

Cheers,

If you have a chromatic tuner, plug a mic into it and practice hitting exact notes. You have to train your voice and ear unless you are one of the fortunate few with perfect pitch recognition, even those lucky few have to train their voices. A tuner will help you learn to recognize the pitch you are trying to reach. Another thing to try is transpose the song to a different key which is more compatable with your voice, or maybe I should have said transpose to a key which your voice is more compatable with. Autotune or other software is no substitute for a good voice, develope your voice, you will be much better off than trying some shortcut.

another brand new user with a dumber than dumb question. Where is it all gonna end?

..I have just presssed the record button and recorded my vocals and guitar playing ...snip

Don't want to presume anything but they are on separate tracks at least?
Doing multiple tracks of your vocal and editing the best parts together is free, and in the process you learn the song and how to sing it better.
Otherwise, buy one of the auto tuners?
Just curious (and none of my business) how did you get in the situtation where you have to do this? (Let someone else sing it?

The best advice in this thread. (not to put the others down for trying to help)

Problem is, I'm sure this great advice won't be heeded because it involves actual "work" and "practice".

How bad are you? Can you post a sample?

The first step in recognizing that you are out of tune, so that is a good sign. If it is just in certain areas, that may can be fixed with breaking the song up in parts (for breathing purposes) some part will be pitchy because it is a human deficiency to sing when you are running out of breath.
Aside from just not having the abiity to sing in tune, breathing tends to be a major oversight in many singers. Now if you just can't sing to save your life, there is no hope.
I have Melodyne, but it should used sparingly to stretch some parts and eliminate other minor issue. But definitlely not to make a horse sound like a bird!

Good Luck!

Getting a tuner and playing to it is one way of doing it, but being able to hit one note at concert pitch is different from actually singing a song.

As someone who started out crap and ended up actually being able to sing to a recordable standard, my advice would be to practice singing along to your favourite albums. Chose melodic songs, like the Beach Boys (for example) rather than some metal/hardcore band with no tune.

I find a good place to practice singing is in the car, when I'm completely alone and I can let it all out shamelessly.

However this will take time (took me about 6 years of constand practice tto develop my voice) but believe me if you keep doing at you WILL get better. Best time to start is now though.

Otherwise, buy Autotune.

Isnt there a piece of software or a plug in that looks at each vocal as a graph. Which then enables you to add nodes to the line on the graph and pull them up or down to match the required note or pitch?

I'm sure i saw someone using something similar with adobe audition. Is something similar available for mac or logic as logics free vocal tuner is a bit hit and miss... a bit like the vocalist that needs to use it... like myself sometimes ha!

Melody, tone, enunciation, breathing, note replication, and other factors all combine to make a singer. Autotune or other pitch shifting software may help with minor variations where someone gets a little off key but wont help with any of the other parts that go into a good vocal. IMHO there is no substitute for a good singer to start with.

Fixing a bad voice (in the mix) is as ridiculous as trying to fix an out of tune guitar (in the mix.) Some things just need to be right up front. No one simply picks up an instrument and plays it, it takes practice, a voice is another instrument, it takes practice to get a voice to sound the way you want it to.

And most importantly, if you can't hear what you're doing wrong while you're singing and not being able to correct it is very bad! It's not good to notice it in the recording..........
To use software to make a person sound in key is a big hint that you shouldn't be singing for recording purposes!

Stop making sense already. :)
