Shedding problem on Fostex R8

Got a strange problem. I'm using a Fostex Model 80 and a R8, normally recording a six-piece band on seven channels on the M80 (ch. 1 is shot) and mixing down to the R8 to add vocals, percussion, room sound and strange effects on that. Works fine.

However the R8 is giving me a bit of a headache as it's shedding big time to the point where I believe it will cause drop-offs and high frequency loss - there'll be brown stuff all over the transport after just an hour of use. With the very same tapes the M80 hardly makes anything, even after intense sessions there'll only be a tiny bit of dirt of the cotton swab when cleaning. I'm using mostly old AGFA and BASF tapes but also a bit of Scotch, RMGI and Ampex 457. Using thin tapes doesn't seem to make any difference as the shedding is still there with BASF LP35 and Ampex 457.

I changed the tension rollers because they was pretty messed up but it only gave a slight improvement.

Any advice would make me very damm happy.

There was a bit on the old tension rollers but nothing as far as I can see on the new one.
I'll double check this evening when I get back to the studio.

The shitty plastic rollers has some rough edges. Can I round them off carefully with a file?
