I'm trying to lay 'Apache' but I'm unsure how to set my Boss CS 3 to get that kinda punchy twang Hank gets. Any thoughts on this?? It ahs the follwoing settings: Level, Tone, Attack, Sustain. Using my Tele. Thanks!

Damn I don't know if it was just the amp he used or what, could have been just the tape itself compressing it in those days, wasn't it the late 50's or early 60's? He played a Strat I'm pretty sure and an echo unit.

Ooohhh i might try a slap back delay...yeah it is very old alright. Cheers Tony.

I think he used a binson echorec much like David Gilmour so you might try and figure out how to clone that effect.... maybe that would help?

i thinkthe compression you're hearing is pretty much just the amp.

Yeah I do imagine alot of the one is down to a vintage valve amp and tape machine recording. I'll see what I can do with a delay.

It would have been a very uncomplicated (by today's standards) signal chain............probably, as has been suggested, guitar-->amp with tape echo unit somewhere and recorded to tape through quality gear.

I was in high school and playing in my first bands in the early/mid '60s and covered a lot of Shadows stuff..........it wasn't hard to get close to that sound.

Strat, Meazzi echo unit, vox AC 30. I think that was the original set up for Apachie, 12 or 13 gauge strings also help, most likely some reverb was added in the studio to glue and smooth the sound.
You'll find an amp with the EL 84 output valves suits the Shadow souind better, the echo unit is the biggest part of the story. A lot of people are now using Alesis Q2 or Q20 to create the sound, you can get a multy tap echo with these units and you can electronically alter the head spacing.
A lot of the sound is in the player.
Only my thoughts.

Thanks all! I'll sure see what I can do!

I'll have to make do without an original ac 30, a 1960's strat and a boutique echo unit. Oh well! :)

I think Meazzi put Vox badges on some units and resold them under the Vox name. The Meazzi Echomateic has the facility to give that rippling echo effect, actually the echo sound on Apachie seems to have the second head switched dff when you really listen to the echo pattern, its a minefield trying to get that sound, people who have really studied the sound reckon the strings were quite old and worn, i don't think you could get 8, 9 and 10 gauge back then, i think most of the strings were them Cathedral cheese graters probably about 13s.
Marvin moved on to the Roland space echoes and later to the Q20 from Alesis which is programmed by a company in the UK called EFTP, who electronically recreate many of the vintage echo sounds.

I was playing around with the Shadows style a few months back and recorded this, i've gained more experience at recording since then but just for fun.............

The more modernised Shadows type sound.

this is awesome!

how did you record those guitars???? i would kill for a sound like that !!!!!!!!

I used a JD 10 preamp

And a Hughes and Kettner Replex echo/Delay........

I think the Boss DD3 is a great delay pedal also, not quite the surf thing but very good.
The JD 10 was purchased off sbay for 20 dollars, the Replex was quite expensive. Recorded straight intro Sonar 5 and a bit of reverb and compression added in Sonar.

I played in a "Shadows" Tribute band! Nice work Vikki, I love the Shadows. Hank lives not far from me here in Perth. :)
