SF 6.0 doesn't playback in 24 bit

I just upgraded my system with a bigger C drive and went from Win 2000 to Win XP. After reinstalling everything, I noticed that when I went to play files in SF 6.0 there was silence for about 2 seconds, then a pop, then my digial mixer said "Wrong Word Clock Source" for about 6 more seconds, then all was well. The sound looped fine after that. The "Wrong word clock" sign disappeared. When I stopped the clip and restarted. Same thing, silence, pop, message.

I messed around with just about every option in the Wav tab of Preferences and what fixed it was unchecking the "try to open 24 bit" box. Here is what I don't understand (well okay, there is lots I don't understand, so here's the question). The wav file is 24 bit, my soundcard takes 24 bit and my other programs, CEP2.1, Sonar 3.1.1 and Acid 4.0, all work fine, even though they open the sounds in 24 bit and play them back. Sooo:

1) Even though the playback is 16 bit, the wav will still be edited at a higher bit depth in SF.... correct?

2) What the heck is happening, why SF 6.0 and not Sonar or CEP which can't handle the 24 bit?

My system, P4 with 1 gig ram, several hard drives, Frontier Designs Dakota Tango soundcard with latest drivers, the soundcard runs into a Yamaha AW 4416 which is set to record and playback in 24 bit. I use the internal source on the soundcard for my Wordclock and send that to the Yamaha via ADAT (again, with Sonar, CEP or Acid, I do not get any Wrong Wordclock messages)

Thanks in advance

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I am not sure what the problem is, rjt.

Have you ttied reinstalling SF6?

Have you tried updating SF6 from the Sony site?

Didn't know you could redownload it from Sony since they changed hands. Will check it out. In any event, SF was freshly installed.... as I had a new hard drive. Very puzzling.

Thanks for the reply

Sometimes the order that you install your programs effects the way that those said programs behave.

Yes, you can download updates from the parent website. ;)

Peace...

Well, I can't remember what the install order was. I am pretty sure that Sonar came first. I did download from the mother ship and upgraded to 6.0e build 237, but no go. Runs fine at 16 bit, but pop, silence, error message when I try to play 24. Also upgraded Acid 4.0 (gee, I KNEW there was some reason I needed DSL instead of my dial up) and that continues to work fine and play in 24 bit. I'm stumped.

Thanks for your time. Further thoughts, suggestions or commiseration are welcome.

rjt, I am not sure what the problem could be?

You might want to uninstall, then reinstall SF6.....

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have an e-mail into the sound card manufacturer. Is Sony supporting SF6 with technical questions?

Bit Depth

Sony/Sonic Foundry tools are capable of 16 bit depth and no higher. In a recent post I mentioned ditching SForge and opting for the superior control available in Acid 4.0 Pro, I believe everyone should do this, but, then again I am opinionated jerk...

Only 16 bit? It says it opened the wav in 24 bit. It reports 32 bit internal processing and definitely saves 24 bit. As far as I can tell the problem is only in playback. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the thought.

This is complete and total nonsense, friend.

Sound Forge ABSOLUTELY supports 24-bit/96KHz digital audio - I use it for hi-res editing of AIFF files all the time.

You might want to consider researching your theories before posting them as erroneous facts. It avoids making the rest of us clean-up after you.

Okay, I think I solved the 24 bit playback, although I don't know exactly why. I used Frontier Designs and the Yamaha AW 4416 for 3 years or so with Win 2000. As I had to change the C drive anyway, I thought it was a good time to upgrade to XP. I was using the same settings in the Frontier Designs Control Panel as I had used with XP..... it was set to internal as the clock source. Well, when I changed to varispeed, it worked fine..... SF 6 plays 16 or 24 bit loops just like it used to... no silence, pop, error message. I know what varispeed is (have just read the manual), but am not sure why I would have to change to that when moving to XP.... as I recall, I had tried that in 2000 when originally trying to figure out sync options and it DIDN'T work. Hmmmm

Well, it goes to show the value of changing one thing at a time, seeing if that is it, going back and changing the next thing. Took over a week to get this one... in fact, as most other things were working without this "fix" I had just about given up. It didn't occur to me to even try varispeed until I opened the FD control panel to look at something else. Go figure

Thanks for everyones time and suggestions.

Bear, Thank You...
I was wrong on that count and I will, in the future drop my SF bashing...As you say, SForge IS capable of 24/96 resolution, and that may be the fly in my ointment when it comes to me arguing that "no one needs Soundforge". I guess that some people may need to use the interface, as it will render to a higher resolution, but only in the case where the signal (file) has been at 24/96 from conception to master. Otherwise, as in the case of some people's posts here, using SF as a standalone editor adjunct to Acid is foolish, and telling new users that they must buy Soundforge, just to edit samples for Acid, is clumsy and uninformed. So, I do apologise, Bear, you are correct, I was wrong, but only in a portion of my belief.

This was true fpr older versions of SF SW, but Vegas Video 3 and up and SF 6 both do 24/96.

C D'Asta, how do you propose that the user edit/truncate their samples???????
