I'm purchasing Roland's Edirol R09 for field recordings, mainly for brass instruments, percusion and choirs away from my studio, this is mainly for electronic production purposses, ambiend, downtempo, chill out, house and cinematic.

I was thinking about purchasing a battery powered mic, AKGs C1000S I though was my best shot, but then I was advised not to get it yet for quality reasons, that the mics that the Edirol uses are quite efficient.

What do you guys think? Would the mics the Edirol comes with do the trick? Is the Edirol quiet enough not to dusturb the recording? Do you guys recommend i get a different mic, and if so which do you recommend? I don't really want to go over $100 for a mic quite yet.

Thanks for your replies.

For <100 bucks? I don't know... but my guess is that the Edirol onboard mic might not be really that bad. I use on occasion this Sony ECM-MS907 wish isn't too bad. It's stereo and has a stereo spread switch, 90 & 120 degrees, battery powered, 100 bucks.

You may find the onboard mics are ok for some stuff, but that some kinds of things will require a different approach, like using a shotgun mic for longer distances, less immediate background signal, particular focus and so forth. I'd start with what you have first and see how it works for its intended use. You might find it's just the ticket.
