Hello! I'm very new to this, so let me know if I say anything that doesn't make sense.

What I'm trying to do is take beats I've written in the DR-880, open them in LMMS, edit them and transfer that back to the 880. Right now I'm stuck on the first part.

I've got the computer receiving signals from the 880 via USB, but my problem now is it interprets the different drum pads as notes on a single insturment instead of different instruments. Is there a way to change the way LMMS is registering the MIDI signals?
Can I set up an instrument in LMMS to respond to only one of the pads on the 880?
Thanks for any help!

1st question: what is LMMS

what you are doing is correct, it will spit out one midi track with a bunch of notes with each note being an instrument. Now what you need is a GM (General Midi) drum instrument to play those sounds. What you should be doing is just routing the midi through the computer and back out to the drum machine so the flow would be drum machine->computer->drum machine. You record the pattern to the computer, do the edit, then just record it back to the drum machine
