that picture on the top left is almost exactly how my friend had his drums set up when he first got them. except my friend had the tom mounts facing even further outward to the point where they were just straight across. the toms were about at that angle and height. and it was a fusion kit too, so the small shells being way up in the air and tilted just looked so dorky haha.

I keep mine slightly angled (pretty much like yours EZ) with my snare just above my thighs... I'm also one of those 'freaks' who angles the snare away from me... :p There's 6 toms with the pairs within an inch of each other...

It's 'gig season' right now so the drums aren't set up but here's some recent pics... Next time out I'll try and get some pics from the throne perspective, but I think you can see alot from these:

Don't bother the poor placing of the mics, i was so excited i finally got them that i set them up as quickly as possible and did some test runs. Don't mind the missing bassdrum mic either, the store from which i ordered all the stuff forgot to deliver my bassdrummic stand.
 
This whole thread is retarded.

I set up my drums for me, and no one else who has ever sat behind my setup "as is" has ever been happy. The same goes for me when I've had to use someone else's kit at a gig and they won't let me readjust the toms or cymbals.

I like my kick far away, and I like my toms close. But I'm short, so I sit low. It helps to mount toms on stands or a rack to help position them better.

And if somebody plays guitar with the strap adjusted to knee level, he might like it. It will cause his wrist to bend at an un-natural angle, rob him of leverage for bends, and cause interference reaching certain notes. He might feel completely comfortable, but will be far more likely to suffer a playing-related injury.

Why would you get your dander up about a thread with people sharing their ideas to make a kit optimally playable, anyway? The tips all fall into two categories: put everything where it an be reached most easily, and put everything where it can be hit most effectively.

A couple of rack toms four inches apart, and angled 30 degrees, simply violate both concepts. If the drummer likes it, fine, but he is using un-needed energy to move from drum to drum, which will affect the performance, and will not likely strike the head perpendicularly, which will affect the sound. If somebody has not developed a preferrance, why not let him adopt a preference towards a physically and physiologically optimal placement?
 
Nice layout, Bush! I could do with flatter toms, but that's well thought out in general.

My son set them up (he is the drummer in the family). I play guitar. When I record, I play the drums if he isnt around. I have a hard time hitting the right crash :) and want to move it more center, but he wants it there. With practice I will be able to hit it better.
