I'm having trouble setting the input levels in Home Studio 2002. Where's the best place to start: Console View or the Creative Sound Blaster volume control. I'm having a hard time with both. Any ideas?

Set the Creative first to ~90% up. Then use the trim/level slider in track view.

Sorry, Clemie, the controls in Track View (or any other view in HS) have no effect on recording levels. They only control playback levels.

Recording level control is done from your preamp. I believe the SB has an onboard preamp, so you might get some control from the SB Software Mixer. I control my input volume from my Mackie, which serves as my preamps.

Use the record meters in HS2002 to determine how hot to set everything.

Controls the volume going into the Volume Control slider. According to the help manual it can be used to calibrate the Volume Control slider.

Volume Trim acts like the trim control on a mixer, raising or lower the level prior to the volume fader. Volume Trim is useful for calibrating your faders to match a dB reference level or for aligning your faders for grouping. The Volume Trim control has a range of -18dB to +18dB. Raising or lowering the Volume Trim raises or lowers the apparent volume of the track by that amount without affecting the actual fader level.

Personally I never use it, but regardless it doesn't control the recording level. As I said, none of the controls in HS2002 (or Sonar) control recording levels.

To add a bit, Trim and Clip Envelopes are both pre-everything else, effects inserts, ect.
I like to use the clip envelopes to match up punches and overdub volumes and all the small clean up moves befor committing to track envelopes.
Thanks to Dachay2tnr for an idea for the trim control; tweaking grouped drum O/H stereo balance.
cool.:D

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm glad I finally found such a helpful message board on recording. You guys seem to really know your stuff.

I basically just have to tweak the input level on the Creative SB mixer then, and watch the record level meter in HS2002 until I get it where I want it.

What is your signal chain leading into the SB? You might be better tweaking from there.
